I need some clarification on the optimal height for a 600 watt light. The problem is the distances of an air cooled vs. open air reflector are not distinguished.

This is somewhat of a conundrum. Keep the light closer and suffer higher temps which means fluffier buds or lift them up a bit to reduce the heat.

I have an open air reflector which is why I ask. In veg I keep it as low as possible without burning but it cranks up the heat. Not the room temp but the canopy temp(and I imagine lower as well). My room temp stays around 70-75 degrees. I have a thermometer at about 22 inches from my light at all times as well and the temp at that distance is usually around 75-80 degrees. This is with oscillating fans going.

Basically looking for a Goldilocks solution if anyone has found one.

If your response is a guess, don't bother. Everyone who looks through grow threads and has experience knows tons of it is demonstrably false guesses.

Wattage/10 = height in centimeters. Use that as max, use 2-4 inches less as minimum. That assumes an appropriately matching surface, i.e. 3x3' for 400watt, 4x4' for 600watt, 5x5 for 1000watt.

use the back of your hand trick. if its too hot on the back of your hand under the hood, then you need to raise it. 15 second rule is what I go by.
