630w DE - CMH?

Holy shit, $140 for JUST.the bulb
Yeah 140 u.s. which is about 185 canadian but up here it will cost me $ 145.00 ( on sale! reg 195.00) for a Phillips 315w bulb (best price I could find)
It would also cost me about $750 on sale (regular $950) for a sun system 315 or $1450 (reg $1950) for the sun system 630 (dual 315's) so if this bulb is a performer it would make way more sense for me to use my own ballast and ac/de hood and this bulb. Still Anson much cheaper then the $1450 for the sun system 630 which is just dual bulbs.

All prices quoted from bustan.ca. the best prices I could find because of their current sales.

the real question is how efficient is it in absence of a square-wave ballast?. i believe the area under a sine wave is 0.707 that of a square wave of similar amplitude....
That's what I'm hoping someone a lot more intelligent then myself in this area could answer. Is the juice worth the squeeze?

I have a thread going where I was discussing this. It's made to run on a low freq square, so there is no ballast on the market to power this properly. You can take a DE HPS and dim it to 600, but you're going to burn the bulb up quicker. The only question is how much quicker. I love my CMH, but I just don't know the DE tech is there yet. You'd have to get a ballast and a hood separately, and I haven't found any tech specs for footprint of those lamps.

IMO, still too new to really invest in. Let them finish making the new ballast (I think GC is working on one for this) before investing. That bulb is 140, and can only be found through them, and I'd hate to burn one of those up too quickly.

looks like about the best spectrum i have ever seen if its true
3100K with enhanced red is probably the best bulb on the market to flower, color wise, imo. Plus it has UV. I don't see the point of flowering under the 4200K when the 3100K is available, unless you're vegging under it too.

Thank you for the suggestion

What about this kit that claims comes with a square wave ballast to support it?

Or this one?

Well I'll be damned. Yeah, that would work. I'd never buy a ballast from China, though. I'd prefer to use a company that I'm sure I'd be covered on a warranty for. And personally, I'd want to air cool my DE fixtures. The 315 put out enough heat as it is, I'm already wanting to get the conversion kit for the Phantom hoods for those, let alone double the power.

Agree with the air cooling. on the website in the q+a for this they claim I could use this ac/de reflector with the 630w de cmh

Also I found this this website with with a little blurb at the bottom about ballast and hoods and they say they are in the midst of developing thier own 630w de ballast for it. Looks like these might be the way to go once they gain some footing and support

[Edit]
Sorry Hockey Beard I just noticed you already told me this lol it took a min to connect GC to growers choice

Let them finish making the new ballast (I think GC is working on one for this) before investing.
Also sorry for starting a new thread on the subject I could not find anything when i searched I just found info on the double 315w systems.

As soon as they make it, I'm all over it. I'm a believer on the CMH, and I'd be really interested to see the footprint in a good air-cooled hood. AFAIK, you want one that cools the interior and doesn't pass air over the bulbs, as the CMH are sensitive to temp shifts. Something to consider when selecting a hood.
