Those 40 watt lights have about 8 inches of penetration for flowering, keep that in mind. If you use no reflector you will lose over half your light too. The light comes straight out the bottom and straight out the sides of the bulb in a circle, like the spokes of a wheel.
I use a large 11 inch diameter clamp reflector with a y splitter for the 2 bulbs. It doubles the lumens or intensity of light to the plant. You will need a small fan to cool the top of the plant as the reflector traps heat, I do not use one but if you want max yields you will use one.
With the 40 watt bulbs you will need the y splitter and an extender which will run you 3 or 4 bucks. Without the extender you will not have room and the bulbs will hit the reflector. I use 27 watt bulbs so only need the splitter. Hardware store will carry this stuff but a large reflector is not going to be in every store.
The 2 bulbs together in the y configuration will mix the side light from each and give you additional penetration, like 16 inches if you are lucky. You can grow a 1 oz. plant with this setup. If the bulbs stick out of the edges of the reflector a bit, which I think they will, you can use chopped up soda cans or other aluminum to glue on the edges of reflector and extend it 2 inches to get all the light reflected.
Keep the plant as close to the light as possible without burning it. At first a few inches away and in 1 or 2 weeks drop that light within 1 or 2 inches from the plant. You can adjust as needed, farther away for stretch, closer for keeping it short. In flower you want it close for sure. 2 gallons of potting soil should be enough for a plant.
If I were you you I would think of doubling your light setup as I described above, and grow 2 plants. It takes me 4 months from seed to cured buds. I veg for 6 weeks and then flower for 70 days. The longer you veg the more you get later. Cure is a week minimum to smoke, and a month to have really good stuff.
