I bought some big city hydro mix (coco, perlite, lava rocks) thinking it was soil! I spent a week trying to figure out why my clones were dying. I've always grown in soil and made the novice mistake of buying something without knowing what was in it.
After realize my plants had been deprived of any nutrients for a week, I began a hydroponic feeding schedule. I have never grown hydro before and got what I thought I needed from my reading. I bought the whole flora GH series, calimag, ph up down, ph tester, ph buffer, grow tray.
After spending one week babying my plants, I now know why people choose hydro over soil. I put my clones in 2 gallon pots and after 2 weeks in coco, the roots were already circling the container sides and bottom. I have never seen such vigorous plant growth with my soil grows. And it is ridiculously easy to feed and water these plants. I will never grow in soil again.
My grow consists of: 1000w mh for veg hps for lower, digital switchable ballast, 6" inline exaust controlled by a programmable thermostat, 16 plants now all in 3 gallon buckets, all receiving a 1-1-1(tsp) per gallon(tap water that sat out for 2 days) flora series nutrient mix, the medium is now mostly coco (80% coco, 20% perlite). Temperature in the grow room is maintained at 74 lights on and 61 lights off, a wall mounted fan blows under the light which hangs 36" away from the plant tops.
Ive always been the type of grower to LST the hell out of my plants, as I am incredibly good at it and love a 12"tall plant that has 6" colas and an ounce on it.
I just wanted to share with Amy new growers that may be cconsidering their medium, that coco is the way to go, or perhaps even mediumless. After only 2 weeks in coco I cant wait to bbuild a NFT system. I can oonly imagine what kind of planta I could grow with constant nutrient supply to the roots. Right now I water once a day, with about 30% runoff just for good luck, and the plants love it.
Anyone who hasn't tried coo should try it out!!!
