A question for those growing in FF ocean forest

The strains that I had were apparently a moderate nutrient strains because my yoda OG leaves are crispy as fuck from the soil. I know that FFOF is a very reputable soil, but it seems to be just a little too hot for me. I was thinking about mixing it, preferably with Happy frog, or maybe even some coco mix. What do you guys think? Would doing half ocean forest and half happy frog cut down on my early fan leaf burns?

It's not your strain; FFOF is a fairly stout mix plus IMO they do not mix it up as well as they should leaving "hot spots." If you just flush them with some good clean water they should recover in time. I have made that exact same mistake and all the plants ended up being fine after a few weeks. Cutting it down with coco and perlite is an option but obviously you'll need to pull the plants out of that OF mix temporarily in order to do this. Next time I would try to use a milder starter mix in a small pot and save the OF for when the plants have a few more nodes. You could also layer the soil in your containers in such a way that the roots do not get to touch that strong-ass mix until they grow out a bit more.

The layering is a great idea, but I think that's a bit beyond my abilities right now. I'm about to harvest for the first time. I have a hard enough time knowing when to feed who and how much as it is.

If it's burning little plants it might be that you're watering wrong.... That ffof kinda works like a time release

Maybe that's the problem- too much feeding. Just FFOF & non-chlorinated water is they really need... maybe the occasional organic tea. Are you giving them nutrients?
whats the easiest way to get non chlorinated water? I know a lot of people do a large container with an air pump, but I dont really have any more space for something like that.

I use water from a dehumidifier which is essentially distilled water but you could just bubble it off for 24 hrs if your tap water contains chlorine. My water system uses chloramine (I know from my annual water quality test report they send me) which cannot be bubbled off so it depends upon your water co what they use. Most modern systems today use chloramine which is why many growers opt to using RO, distilled, or rain water. I also have an RO unit but it does waste a lot of water so I only use it when humidity is low & my dehumidifier won't produce much. Growers will go to great lengths to use clean water because it makes for much higher quality weed & keeps the microlife in the soil that feeds their plants healthy. Chlorine/chloramine kills off the myco fungi & bacteria that the plants use to uptake nutrients. Rain water is the easiest (and cheapest) way to get water IMO but then again you gotta wait til it rains & then remember to put out some buckets.
If you cannot use nonchlorinated water you will be forced to use synthetic nutrient- not really a problem -just use it at 1/2 strength until you get to know what you are doing.

I have a dehumidifier that would probably produce enough water I think, but it's very old. Would you need to be concerned about all the gunk inside an old machine for the quality of its water? I wouldnt want to drink that myself, but I also dont have soil buffering whatever I drink.

Mine has been running down in the basement for a few years. You can rinse it out real good with vinegar & bleach every so often if it starts to smell nasty but a little bacteria growing up the sides is not really bad for them....oh yeah & don't drink dat shit brah

I grow organic and don't see a difference between water that's been left out and water that's straight from the tap.... I don't know that the chlorine or whatever kills enough to make a difference..... I really believe that's hippy dippy organic guru nonsense....

I would buy water before I used water from a dehumidifier or off my gutters...... The what if is too great

If you use synthetic nutes than no it doesn't matter all that much because the plants do not give a shit where they get their food; they will always consume whatever is available. Plus if your tap water system uses chloramine then leaving it out is doing nothing to remove it. Dissolved salts work much the same as organic nutrient but organics must first be broken down through decomposition for the plants to use it & that requires you keep the critters living in your soil alive. It's not hippy bullshit nor am I a hippy or a guru...it's biology. If you smoked some bud grown naturally you'd see the difference water quality makes.
For years I used tap water & nutes but couldn't figure out why my soil would always get dried out in mid flower even after watering every 2 days: it is because the myco fungi that was attached to the roots had become toxic through synthetic death and exposure to harmful chemicals like chlorine.

I hear ya and you sound like a smart guy but I pull pounds with ffof and reuse it over and over pouring straight tap .... Little of this and a little of that.... Some earth juice... Eight four out the faucet

And maybe letting it sit out or bubbling it helps but I just don't believe.....

I used to believe

I'm not trying to be a dick tho and that wasn't a shot at you.... Just saying I believe your wrong... I believe the chlorine thing is all just purist talk.... I believe it does kill but I don't believe its enough to see a difference

Fair enough...My water literally smells like a pool straight out the tap. Maybe it depends upon how much is in your system- my shits like 74ppm. I used to think the same way but seeing how much better it is not using tap water has made me a believer. Since I've been growing organically I've been using dehumidifier water and my plants seem very happy. If you are getting pounds your way my hat is off to you. The key is finding what works for you- as for the OP cut way back on nutes if you are using them & use whatever water source you have available to flush the roots for a couple weeks. They should recover in time either way....

Would you suggest just mixing in some extra perlite with some coco then? I'd rather have a nice stable soil the whole way through, but i think pure ocean forest was just a bit too much

It really makes a difference how MUCH chlorine/chloramine is in the water. In some municipalities you really don't end up with a lot of chlorine/chloramine out of the tap. In some you do. Some don't treat their water with either at all.

With chlorine, however, it reacts with organic matter (including humus) effectively destroying it and forming volatile organic compounds. These compounds, being volatile, gas off. So organic matter like humus essentially neutralizes chlorine, except that it is also destroyed in the process. Humus helps soil retain moisture, so the more humus you destroy the less there is to do so.

You could pull those plants and then cut your mix down with perlite & coco & replant them gently. If it was me I would pour a layer of straight FFOF in the bottom of the pot & use the "cut down" mix in the middle of the container that is touching the roots. You can use FFOF sandwiched on top then put a layer of mulch on top of that to retain moisture. I've put clones straight into the FFOF myself as well but sometimes they do get burn; that's because I think its not always mixed up well enough at the mfger.

I will try that method. It's too late for repotting now. its going to be harvest time real soon.

Wait so you've got plants in late flower that are burned? That's not likely to be from your mix....then it's gotta be from nutes...flushing them with water is your only defense- fuck whether it's got chlorine or not lol I assumed too much
It's either that or you've got a deficiency which seems more likely - are you giving them cal mag?
