i have been told that if i clip the top of my plants they will fill out more,

YES.....
If you clip the top... it will usually let the lower branches GET MORE LIGHT...
this does not mea that you should do it..
1. if you clip the top, you should clone the top
2. no reason to let the sides fill in (top the plant) unless you want massive clones or you only have ONE (or 2 or 3) plant that you want to let get big and/or if you have enough LIGHT to support a WIDE BUSHY plant...
