Adding clay for better nutrient absorption??

So I have a question about clay and it’s importance of nutrient exchange. I guess if you have a higher amount of clay in the soil then you get a higher nutrient exchange and also your soil ph is more stable through the cation exchange capacity(CEC). Has anyone added straight clay to their soils and seen an improvement of growth from your plants or do you just rely on the organic matter for creating a higher CEC?

I've used Turface in the past and this time I'm trying the Napa spill stuff - not the DE one but ordered the Montmorillionite (bentonite?) clay. Some kitty litter brands are also the same calcined clay. My understanding is that you want the mont/bentonite stuff if you do.

When I checked some local landscaping places to try to get the Turface MVP they didn't carry that specific version of it, but while chatting the guy up he did say the local bonsai guys all come in and get the version he does carry. Probably close enough but I was aiming for what others had cited.
