Ok everyone first time doing DWC. It's an afghan kush from world of seeds. PH is 5.9 and ppm on the 500 scale is 350 -380. I do a res change every week using flora nova grow. Growing under two T12 lights. What is going on? If anyone needs any more info to help me with this please ask and thanks for any help anyone can provide.1389828099677.jpg1389828115598.jpg1389828129772.jpg

Looks like brown slime.

Check your res temperature (65 to 70F), make sure infected plants are geting enough air (they say watt per gallon), wash away the snot from the roots giently with water (hand sprayer does the trick), put it in a clean bucket (and clean stones and everything) filled with pure water and some H2O2, run it like that for a few hours and then put it in a fresh res of pure RO water for another 24 hours. Then add nutes again and hope you have fixed it. Also, get some bennies in if you can.

It says floranova contains some organics, so I'd try switching to some other pure synthetic formula that will not feed the nasties.

Yeah I guess I should have mentioned I have been using pondzyme for the past two weeks. Could the slime be the cause the leaves looking like that also?

My res temp is running 70 and I'm using the GH dual diaphragm air pump.

Try changing the nutes and check the sticky topic about Heisenberg's microbe tea. If you can get it fast, you can also try buying some benneficial microbe product like great white, mycogrow... and adding it straight to fresh res.

dyna-gro man! GH Flora 2 part series is good too or botanicare kind... there are others. The important thing with DWC is to not use organics and FloraNova has organics or something in it... there are a few other threads I have seen with the same issue and I got slimed using it too.

I use GH Flora Nova Grow/Bloom in DWC with success. Def turns roots brown. If I ever have root or buildup problems I use SOS by Strata Industries...works the balls.

Are you using the entire FloraNova series? Like all the supplements as well? I think one of those, the Flora Blend Vegan Plant Booster, is full of plant matter/microbes. Might be the culprit.

This is why people have issues in DWC with FloraNova. You should not use organics and you are having root issues... that should be all you need to know to switch nutes.

Is FloraNova series organic?

Answer: FloraNova Grow and Bloom contain 3-5% organic substances creating the marriage between mineral and organic gardening.
you need to run the 2 part series in DWC, FloraNova is too dirty.
Is the Flora Series organic?

Answer: ...{truncated}

...The trouble is unrefined minerals do not dissolve well for hydroponic use and some of these unrefined minerals contain quantities of impurities, some of which are toxic to plants. For that reason, FloraBloom, FloraGro, and FloraMicro are made from high quality refined minerals. This ensures high quality crop production, but prevents the crop from being considered "organic".

"Some" people have issues. My bucket temp stays low so I'm not worried. I rather have organic than chemical in my water.

Personal opinions I guess.

DWC is a poor choice if you are intested in organic gardening. Your floranova is 95% 'chemical' so that's a pretty silly comment. I guess stained brown roots are not a problem in your opinion. I prefer crisp white fishbones.

I'm just using the grow and bloom. I am thinking now I had my lights too close to the plant also and that may be why the leaves look like they do. I definitely fixing to change my nutes to synthetic. I've heard good things about the dyna grow and the GH series. I will keep changing my res and washing the roots till my new stuff comes in. Thanks everyone for the help so far.

I know. Sub super soil looks awesome. 3-5% organic ;) I'm no expert but seems so much better than the TechnaFlora line that I used in beginning. I don't mind brown roots but I do mind slime!
