No, not modify. You need an airpump, tubing and an airstone.

What I did was covered the top with crumpled aluminum foil, then pushed the plants into the two end holes, (only grew two). Then in the outside back hole I pushed the air hose through the foil. Secured it with duct-tape, hooked up the air stone and pump and didn't turn it on until the roots made contact with the water. Before that I just ran the built in aerogarden pump. When you switch to the airstone, you turn off the aerogarden's built in pump. You can still use the lights which should already be on a seperate power cord and timer.

Once the plants were ready to flower, I removed the lighted hood and flowered with a 90W Lighthouse Hydro 2009 quad band. Yield wasn't too bad. Filled up a 2L mason jar pretty well.

Be careful on your choice of nutes though. GH, Dynagrow or Advanced are probably your best choices. I grew with Fox Farm and it left a lot of silt on the bottom, so cleaning between ferts was a real pain in the butt.

Good luck!

P.S. This was my first grow.

guhman2002: If you keep it down to two or three, max, plants an A/G can be perfect for a compact stealthy grow. It's a complete user friendly growing system.

I would suggest you wrap your pump and tower in a short nylon sock like women wear with flat shoes. You can buy a pair at Wal-Mart for about $2. That keeps more crap out of it than the A/G filters.

As far as how long the pump runs that would be a good question for technical support at A/G. Once you have the air stone in there I think it's pretty much academic unless you're trying to start seeds because it moves the nutes pretty well on its own. I've looked at my planting holes through the front vent and I've seen nutes running down on my planting cages at all hours of the night and day.

As far as nutes are concerned I think everyone has their favorites. I've been using Technaflora's "Recipe for Success" for the last couple of years from germination to harvest and I've had no complaints or problems. Their sample kit will last you a long time in an A/G.

Can you further explain if you don't mind, please?

Winner: one weakness the Aerogardens have is the root hairs getting through the filter into the pump and burn up the pump. The filter A/G uses won't keep the root hairs out but you can do one of two things to prevent this from happening. You can buy a 'pump sock/cover,' from your local hydroponics store for about ten to fifteen dollars that will cover your entire tower and pump assembly.

For about two bucks at Wal-Mart you can buy a pair of short nylon socks that women wear with flat shoes. You carefully stretch it over the tower and pump assembly and it seems to do a good job protecting your pump. You might be able to talk your wife or girl friend out of one for free. You have to be careful not to tear it when you stretch it over the pump assembly because the corners of the tower assembly are sharp. New socks are pretty strong compared to the ones that have been used but they all do a good job. You still need the filter in place at the pump but this is double protection. This was a tip suggested to me by a customer service rep over the phone at A/G. He said some people use a woman's panty hose but there's too much material there. I hope this helps.
