In my own experience with DWC, you need a lot of air and you want an airstone directly under each plant for maximum performance. With one 5 gallon bucket (4 gallons of solution), I use a pump rated for a 40 gallon aquarium tank. Basically take the gallon rating of the air pump, divide by 10 and you'e in the ballpark. You can go less but you really want the DWC to look like a rapid boil.

I use the "Whisper" series of air pumps since they are very quiet.

The above advice is very good, "you can never have too much air bubbles going to your roots."
