Airstones in the organic pots?

Folks this may seem a little off the wall ... but has anyone ever considered putting an air stone is the bottom of their pots?

I am going to be going all organic and in 7 gallon pots... since the Myco beasties love aerobic conditions do you think it might help to run an airstone for say 10 minutes an hour if it was in bottom of pot?

Anyone ever tried it? Feedback? thoughts? results?

Just make sure you have good soil. I thought about putting air stone into my water to aerate it. but never the pot.

I read an old academic journal which had an article describing an experiment where they tried this(on non-MJ plants). They forcefully aerated the soil, contained in pots, for 15 minutes once or twice a day a day. For a total of 10-15 liters of air per day. So they must have been using a very low volume pump.

The results were good, increased root growth, more vigorous plants. I don't know if it would increase yield enough to make it worth doing this to a large garden but I think you should try it with clones as an experiment.

I have tried to find the article without success, but with a little searching you could probably find it. I originally found it in a google search.

Here I found it.

http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/j.1469-8137.1925.tb06669.x/pdf

While searching for it I also ran across a couple articles describing the positive effects active aeration can have on soil.(I only read the abstracts). But no more which compared plant growth.

There's a difference though, in this expirement they were drawing the air OUT of the bottom of the pots to be replaced with air from above, instead of pumping air into the bottom of the pot.

"The soil air was
removed from beneath the root systems so that, as it was withdrawn,
it would be replaced by atmospheric air from above the soil surface
containing a smaller proportion of carbon-dioxide (Russell and
Appleyard, 1915)."

Given the above article, then begs question.... suck air in or blow air out from bottom... one is easy to accomplish the other a little more difficult....

Maybe be worth an experiment....

Look into Air pots or Smart pots they are great for air pruning your roots. I haven't use them yet but talked too a few that have and they are great.

I've been wondering about this myself!!! Fuck it, I'm burying a 12" airstone in the middle of my 20gal plastic container underneath the bottom layer of clay pellets I already use. I have an oxygen bottle laying around so I'm gonna run that to the airstone instead of ambient air. I'll kiss your ass on Jerry Springer if this doesn't improve overall vigor...

Despite my earlier posts I know that air pots of any brand and good soil are adequate...but it is still interesting to try stuff and see what happens.

If I were to do it I'd use something like these air hoses, found in the link below, wrapped around the bottom of the pot and just barely covered in perlite.

And I imagine you'll need to be moving the air very very slowly though the soil, or else you'll air prune the whole root ball lol.

What's funny is that I had already planned on using an air hose in the bottom of the trash can that freshly made supersoil will be cooking in. I figure it will help more aerobic bacteria grow all throughout.
