All Perlite???

I usually grow in soil. I wanted to experiment with hydro, but wanted something quick, cheap, and effective. I seen a video and read that the wick setup with the 3 liter bottles is pretty effective. I've also read that an all perlite medium would work just fine, with the wick setup. Just wanted to know if anyone out there has tried this or maybe heard something about the Wick setup and all perlite.
