...and the list goes on

Just a small confession come warning about budgeting and kits. As a new grower this list is the stuff I hadn't budgeted for when I bought what I thought was everything I needed to setup my grow space. My original budget was for grow tent, light and ballast, basic nutes and cal/mag, coir, perlite, fan and filter, small fans, pots, first seeds, timer, ph up/down, jiffy plugs, tempature and humidity meter etc...basically the contents of a 'kit' plus the obvious essentials.

list of shit i had to buy but didn't budget for or bought cheap unreliable product i had to replace:

screw driver set
claw hammer
dry wall saw
junior hack saw
wood screws
1" nails
cable ties
wire cutters
5" wall flange (for ducting)
2x 6" to 5" ducting reducers
5x cheap coir bricks (tested was high EC/salt) had to discard and buy Canna coir
cheap EC meter (sigh)
cheap ph meter (double sigh)
razor blades
CFL light fittings for low power germ and seedling stage
CFL bulbs
bayonet to CFL adapters and CFL socket extenders
watering can with long spout
builders caulk
caulk gun
large heavy duty plastic sheeting
clear plastic shoe box to use for seed germinating / seedlings
small space heater (temps drop sharply without light)
extra timer (for heater)
fan speed controller
ISO
twist tie
soft plant twist tie
3x 3 gallon plant pots and saucers (bought these first but decided to use smaller pots for better use of space)
rooting powder
spare bulb (just in case)
various pest control agents, just in case... again (neem oil, SMC, gnat-off, castile soap)
spray bottles
drill
extra ducting (5m that came with fan+filter was looking a little stretched)
bungee chords (sound dampening of fan)
air cooled tube (replacement for open reflector due to heat issues)
extra worm drive clips for ducting
additional nutes (cannazyme, rhizotonic and pk13/14... may be unnecessary?)
large 45 liter container for nute mixing
hose + tap attachment for filling container

...and counting

over £300 I didn't count on.

Don't repeat this error if you can help it. Buy quality products first time out. Budget for tools etc you don't have make a proper plan and add in all the incidentals like spray bottles, builders caulk, twist ties etc.

My first grow better go perfectly or the added cost of failure will leave me with a rather costly, well lit closet full of junk.

Of course it won't go perfectly.

And since you've invested all that time and money, you'll try again- and again.

'Tis our lot in life, best just to smile and roll your sleeves up.

I already have my 1st 7 or 8 grows planned out. So many phenotypes, so many methods, so little space and time.

I need saving from myself.

Lol, oh my-you've got it bad, don't you?

I'm a terminal case, myself- I've made growing my full time job! I am fortunate indeed that I live in Colorado!

My first year of growing was a mess. To do this day I have a waist high pile of shit I will never use. I was buying meters and lights and fertilizers and ducts and connectors, you name it, I bought it. Once I worked everything out, I had shit left over everywhere.

Just when you thought it was all covered I thought I might add you'll need trimmers, mason jars and gloves for harvesting. Perhaps a set of bubble bags to make some hash with your trim too.

I thought I could use old jam (jelly) jars...guess that was another over optimistic hope. As for gloves I actually have some already...but trimmers. Of course I need trimmers. Bloody trimmers. (mumble)

Yeah but just think....most of these things you will buy once only. My overhead after a few years now is 200 a mth (electricity and soil is my biggest ticket)

yeah, on scissors, I learnt its best to buy a pair in the $15 range and up. Anything below that in price cant take the miles

And this is my fear, ending up with a really well lit closet and a carbon filtered air filtration system I use to keep down cooking smells, having given up indoor growing in favour of a secluded corner of an unused field.
