Any canadian outdoorers out there?

First time really growing outdoors this year since I have medical status now, and am hoping to get a heads up as to what to look out for up here in the great white.

I was bringing plants inside and out last year and I had worms that seemed to cacoon inside my buds. I would find webbing, dense webbing in a small area, like a cacoon, and in some places little green worms inside the webbing. In other places I'd find the little nest abandoned and the bud there was all eaten and starting to rot/mold.

Nasty little buggers! Also had a problem with aphids. Is there anything healthy I can spray on the plants to just keep bugs away? Preferably cheap?

Anything else anyone can warn me about would be great.

B.T. For the worms its the best and i can get a bottle fairly cheap at any gardening store

I always had a problem with critter digging up & or eating roots.
I wrapped some chicken wire around the bottom of a large tomato cage for protection.
Giving the plants a good shake in the morning & after rain is a good practise to get rid moisture to prevent mold & mildew. Alkaline water in a mist bottle can help prevent powdery mildew in the fall.

Having an early finishing-dank strain is a plus up here too. (Dr. Greenthumb's "Goldmine" is a good one.)

critters eh? I have some ground squirrels here that dig holes in my garden but i've never had a problem with them eating food or anything.Last year we had so much rain, it was crazy. I didn't have to water my garden at all. my place was so wet that when i walked on the lawn it was totally squishy. lots of flooding in the fields. this winter has had so much snow too. I'm scared next year will be another wet year. Really worried about buds molding. What is alkaline water? just water that is like a high ph or something?

I wonder if planting above ground in big pots would be better than in the ground if it's so wet & squishy like that.
Alkaline water is at a higher ph, misting the plant with it is an all natural way that can help prevent/control Powdery Mildew. If you don't have problems PM then you won't have to bother with it.

I guess we will see what happens. I ordered plants that are supposed to get pretty big, so I'm sure mold could be a problem on a big bush like that

We clearly aren't from the same part of Canada. Last year was extremely hot and dry in my part of the country. I've never really had any serious bug problems (rippers are the biggest pest in my neck of the woods). With that said, the weather can still get pretty nasty come October and I've had more than my fair share of bud rot. I've ordered some Freezeland for this year, it was developed for the harsh Canadian climate and is supposedly very mold resistant and finishes mid to late September. The price on the seeds was great and they're shipped from Ontario.

Freezeland doesn't do well with mold.. good luck

That isn't what I've been reading, here's what the breeder has to say

Expect a great yield of solid buds able to withstand terrible weather/conditions, a true workhorse strain for northern growers, Pink hairs,lots of frost and smells ranging from pine to citrus/fruit, and a fast finishing time truly makes this one of the most popular outdoor strains in Canada.

I've also read that is similar to M-39 which I've grown plenty of and never had any mold/bud rot issues at all. This is also more of an east coast strain, so I guess it's possible that it does have mold/bud rot issues when grown further west.

Your first mistake is trusting the breeder description.... order some of getawaymountain seeds and you won't regret it. I ordered bc early blueberry which was developed for Canadian weather apparently and was supposed to finish super early. They all finished the end of October and I still pulled early on most, they could have gone till November. Description said they would finish first week of September and they barely started flowering by then

I had the same problem with purple pine berry.

I've been doing this a long time, don't really see where I've made a mistake. I'd like to see you show some proof of the freezeland with bud rot. I'm sure getaway breeds some great strains, but you just finished telling me your "super early" strain didn't finish by the end of October.

We are trying to help you dude, the whole point is I went with a strain due to the breeder description and it was way later and way less yield then they claimed and almost always is. Getaway has a thread and has been breeding for a long long time, his strains are proven. If you do grow freezeland please post pics when you get rot, they go a month later then you thought and the yield isn't what is claimed. Breeder description is marketing at its finest, not like you can return for s refund if your not satisfied. If you've been doing this for a while you should know your area and strains that will work well. Gl

Again I'm not the one asking for help. My opinion on the Freezeland/Friesland is based on plenty of research and direct communication with people who have grown it. M-39 is said to be very similar to freezeland and I've grown it successfully numerous times. Both are early finishing strains with big heavy buds, they both also came from the SSSC catalog and very likely share at least 1 parent. Cross friesland with m-39 and you have Quebec Gold, yet another early finishing strain that does well in the cold Canadian winters.

I'm not going to change my opinion because one poster came in and said he got bud rot on what may or may not have been freezeland.

Guys, all the talk about breeder's descriptions prompted me to post. Breeder's description means shit so if you're growing outdoor from seed you're taking a chance that at least some phenos will not behave as expected. Seeds, no matter what the source will have some variation. If you want to grow something consistent, known for mold resistance and any other traits you want/need. Grab the genetics, grow out a few until you find a pheno that has those traits, and grow those clones outdoor. I never understood outdoor guys growing from seed up here, makes no sense at all when you have a season that provides no room for error.

I agree that breeders info usually isn't accurate, but my opinion was based on info from the internet, local growers and breeders info. I grow clones and seeds for my outdoor grows... I really love the look of big seedling peeking above the corn. TBH we haven't had enough rain in Ontario to worry about mold resistant strains the past couple years.

I'll get a pic of a Blue Ripper posted in your thread later this afternoon.

Yeah a mix of both is good, just not a great idea to have all your eggs in one basket, particularly a basket of seeds! I've known guys offline that swear seeds are better outdoor and then whine about their ruined crops come harvest.

Would love to see what pheno you got of that BR, I'll be using one of the new F2 phenos outdoor, looks like it has everything the F1 pheno had for pest/pm/mould resistance with higher production and knock out punch
