if you have never grown before please look into hempy buckets before you go buy soil.a $4 bag of perlite from walmart fills a 3 gallon bucket perfect.i found 3 gal plastic mop buckets for $1 at a local big lots. i use 100% perlite in a 3 gal. bucket with a 7/16 or so hole drilled 2 inches from the bottom.i'm hear to answer any ?? read this http://www.greenpassion.org/showthread.php?t=3010

I use bato buckets, easier for drainage - No mess. Plus the old water gets syphoned off from the bottom with the drainage elbows. I know, a little more expensive, but I got mine for under $6.

with the hempy bucket i water every other day or so with 2 cups of water and 1/2 strength nutes to wet the top of the perlite and keep the bucket to the full line .but i don't have much if any run off ,i know they say to give them like a gallon so most of it comes right back out but i have never done that and they are very healthy and its a lot harder to mess these up then a soil grow.i see no reason for a first timer or anyone for that matter to be growing in soil indoors? the perlite is reusable .pull the old plant wash every thing and put the new one in.

plant seeds into the peat pucks or rock wool then when they are ready for the first transplant they go right into your hempy bucket

can you go with a bigger bucket? maybe a gallon? i water every day for the first week to let the roots spread out good.after that every 2-4 days is fine.if your perlite comes with the miracle grow in it don't use nutes for a while until it looks like it needs them.when you water go until you get water coming out the hole you put in about 2 inches from the bottom. you can go untill you have a lot of run off or stop as soon as you see water your really just trying to get all the top stuff wet everyday so the roots grow every where not just to the bottom.

I can't give you rep again just yet, but I had to thank you again for sharing! I caught this thread last week, and it probably changed the way I grow! Started my first hempy experiment this weekend - one baby feminized Super Lemon Haze. If it works out, hopefully I won't have to lug soil anymore. Thanks a bunch!
