Bad genetics or me?

Hi all! Although I have been growing since 2009, I still consider myself a newbie since I only have 3 grows under my belt. My first grow turned into 3 hermies and about 10 lbs of seeds. That was all on me and my grow team at the time and we had way too many problems that stressed out our Thai Sativas that we were trying to grow. Bad strain for a newb to start out with anyway! After that, my husband wouldn't allow me to grow anymore, so I got rid of him and started growing on my own. This time after doing a little better job at research.

My 2nd grow went a lot better. I didn't have impressive results. I only ended up with 2 1/2 oz out of 2 plants grown under a Platinum LED P150. My guess was that there was a lack of light to do well enough to have a decent yield. I wasn't very impressed with the smoke, so I made some edibles out of it, acquired some better product from a friend to smoke, and moved on.

Back in April, I decided to give it another go and started doing a ton of research. I decided to just use 1 of the seeds that I purchased for my 2nd grow that wasn't used yet. This was Sour Kush from Canuk Seeds. This girl was put through hell. Mainlined, LSTd, Supercropped, and eventually put into a SCROG. She responded very well. I vegged her for 6 weeks under my Platinum LED P150, then transferred to my small 2x3 grow setup for flowering under a 600 watt HPS dimmed to 400 watts for the next 11 weeks. She was grown in Happy Frog soil in a 7 gallon fabric pot, fed Botanicare nutrients including a couple of their supplements, and flushed for the final 2 weeks. pH was kept between 6.2 and 6.3. The only real problems I had were temperature and humidity. It was summer in Michigan and temps were very difficult to keep under 85, and humidity under 65% so I kept the fans running 24/7 for the entire flowering period to try to keep those as low as possible. On August 31st, I noticed the trichomes at 10% amber, 10% clear and 80% cloudy. Since this is my first post, I am only able to attach 1 pic from the day before harvest. Otherwise I would attach more. It took 10 days of drying before jarring up to cure. After curing for 1 1/2 months, I weighed out at just over 8 oz, and I finally had the chance to try some in my vape. I was entirely unimpressed. Very little flavor, and effects that only lasted an hour after vaping .25 g, that's all that my Crafty vape will hold.

I know that a lot of people have something against Canuk Seeds, so is it the genetics, or is it me? I want to switch to a US breeder anyway, but I still have lots of Canuk Seeds in my fridge. I don't want to just toss them, but definitely going to try a different breeder. Looking at Bodhi for my next go round. Looking for any advice, opinions, whatever. I take criticism rather well and tend to learn from it so negative comments are welcome as well.

Thanks everyone,
ATM

It's not bad at all. I have no idea about canuk seeds but you're at the point where you need some straight up known GOOD genetics-if I were you, and had the space, I'd take advantage of the cyber monday tent sales going on and get a 4x4 tent and run your 600 hps at full power, along with the new genetics in your future. A few sites off hand that have tents on sale today are growers house, hydrobuilder, and grow ace.

Thanks! I would love to get a larger tent, but I just don't have a place to put it at the moment. Maybe someday soon. I do, however have a couple of HLG QB96's and a Meanwell driver coming at the moment to try to keep heat down a little more. Not sure if it will make much of a difference though.

The plants look good, so I would chalk it up to the genetics. Sometimes even the prettiest plants are lackluster when you finally smoke em but its all part of the pheno hunt.
What types of strains do you find enjoyable? That should help narrow down a breeder for your taste buds. I personally havent found alot of killer flavor profiles in the bodhi gear I have run, but others seem to like him alot.

I seem to like the fruitier flavors more, but it's more the effect that I am looking for. I deal with a lot of neuropathic pain, depression, anxiety, and insomnia. I know that Sour Kush really isn't good for insomnia, but I really thought the lemony, fuel terpene profile sounded rather good. That's why I went with that. I had a great Super Lemon Haze BHO back when BHO first started to gain a lot of popularity and have been looking for that flavor profile since then unsuccessfully. I would try to grow that out, but it just doesn't provide the relief that I am looking for. I would rather go with an Indica or an Indica dominant hybrid.

Looking at some of those Oni Seeds strains reminded me that I have some Rare Dankness - The Ox hiding in the back of my fridge. They've been sitting in there for a few years now but should still be okay. Maybe I'll give those a try next? Those were supposed to be fairly good when I bought them.

You're in Michigan. Get some seeds from the seed cellar of quality genetics.

Thanks for the information on Seed Cellar. I haven't been looking for new strains for a few years now and just found out that there are several seedbanks here in the States that are now shipping to Michigan. I'm trying to find out who is reputable. So far I have read that Great Lakes Genetics, DC Seed Exchange, and now Seed Cellar. I know there are others, anybody have any they use and have had good experiences with?

A lot of us fight heat and other parameter variances in our grow environ and usually see flavor and potency get better as parameter are kept in check....with heat being the primary culprit, regardless the breeder....

JBC seeds is who I use here in the states. Great selection, crazy fast shipping, and sweet freebies. Only place I've ever used, but its one of those "if it ain't broke" things for me. Solid place to do business with :blsmoke:

You could also look at purchasing some well known keeper clones from a reputable source and not have to wonder if its genetics or you skills. Some clones are high in price but there’s some good ones out there that are priced decent. Also look at Great Lakes genetics, Neptune, platinum, Oregon elite , Area 51, to name a few seed banks.

So, I have to go back and change my initial report on this. Those first few buds were a bad representation of the plant in a whole. After smoking it for a little while and letting it cure a little longer, it actually isn't bad. It did have a nice sweet lemony flavor for a while with an aftertaste that reminds me of dryer sheets. I personally need what I consider a lot to have good effects on me, but perhaps my tolerance has gone up lately. It takes 200-250mg in my vape along with 5-7 hits of rosin to provide pain relief. It leaves me very clear headed and thinking a lot. It can definitely keep me up at night though and make me want to do things instead of going to sleep.

Here's a little bud porn of how the final cured product came out:

rare indeed for the seeds to be an issue, good for you to blame yourself thats a great start ...
next fix the light and up grade your soil to be at least partially organic, will improve your quality

you have had at best an average start so stop beating yourself up

far far worse on here

good luck
