Considering a homemade bubbleponics . Seems to me that badminton shuttlecocks (yep, that's what they're called) with rock wool and the rubber tip pulled off would be a good thing to put into the holes of a homemade device.

wow i had this same idea when searching for "ghetto" net pots...I spent hours in walmart and other big chain stores looking for something to use..and shuttlecocks are the closest thing I could find. luckily a hydro store opened here and I didn't have to go that route...but still..sounds like a good idea to me if that is your only option.
