Being on the right side of an unpopular issue when it matters

How many issues can you point to for your preferred candidate when they were on the right side of history and voiced an unpopular opinion, even though they knew it was the right thing to do?

Sanders was on the right side of:

-civil rights
-gay marriage/DADT
-banking deregulation
-the Iraq war
-the financial bailouts
-Dodd-Frank
-immigration/modern concentration camps
-income/wealth inequality

Gay marriage is a trap for gay people and is not a positive achievement.

Being made to ask government for permission to marry via licensure, the same as straight people, doesn't increase freedom, it lessens it.

If Bernie is against war, why do you suppose he's voted to fully fund the Pentagon?

I'll be honest, I don't really give a crap where somebody stood on positions before, only where they stand now. Being on the right side of 100 positions doesn't mean crap if you can't accomplish any of your goals. Being on the right side of 60% and getting some done is better.

Dubya got stuff done. So did his dad. So did Nixon. The EPA actually did some good too.

Well there are some core positions that I care more about lets say. Tran-gender rights? Yes they should have them just like everybody else. Would I vote for somebody who supports transgender rights if I don't think they could get their core issues addressed? Hell no.

I was all for Bernie round one, I think he would have won. I also think his chance is over. I don't believe in his ability to win anymore.

There were polls at the time saying that he would have won against Trump when comparing him to Clinton. I can't tell you how many people (well actually I can, 5 or 6) who told me they were voting for Trump on the simple fact that they hated her so very very much. Not even her positions mind you, they always brought up Banghazi and E-mails, walking meat puppets. 3 of those 6 probably voted.

To be fair. Wasn't he, like, the only asshole to vote against the Iraq war?

Republicans are eroding progress or treating people brutally in all of those categories, right?

What's Bernie done to stop them? Name one bill that he sponsored during the 16+ years he's served as Senator that made a difference in any of those issues.

As the 2016 election cycle heats up, one can expect more scrutiny to be focused upon the most high profile candidates – along with some false accusations. Today we take a look the claim that Bernie Sanders has never proposed a bill which passed.

SANDERS BILLS WHICH PASSED
Several memes, such as the one below, have suggested that Sanders never proposed a bill which passed in his decades in office. While some of the other claims cited below may delve into a gray area, Sanders’ history of sponsored legislation is simple to verify without refutation.

If we look at Sanders’ record at Congress.gov, we can see that he has in fact sponsored a small number of bills which made it to the President’s desk. Although Sanders sponsored hundreds of pieces of legislation which date back to 1991, only three have become law.

Of all the bills that Sanders sponsored, we have the following breakdown:

  • 357 introduced by Sanders
  • 190 were considered by committee
  • 12 were considered by the floor
  • 1 failed one chamber
  • 6 passed one chamber
  • 3 passed both chambers, went to the President, and became law
Those three bills, according to Congress.gov, are:

S.893 Introduced 5/8/13. The Veterans’ Compensation Cost-of-Living Adjustment Act of 2013 which became law in November 2013

S.885 Introduced 5/7/13. A bill to designate the facility of the United States Postal Service located at 35 Park Street in Danville, Vermont, as the “Thaddeus Stevens Post Office” became law in November 2014.

H.R.5245 Introduced 4/27/06. To designate the facility of the United States Postal Service located at 1 Marble Street in Fair Haven, Vermont, as the “Matthew Lyon Post Office Building” became law in August 2006.

Thus, the claim that Sanders have never sponsored a bill that passed is untrue. Detractors may point out that two of those three bills merely renamed post offices, but even without those, Sanders does have one significant bill to his name.

Further, Sanders is cited as a co-sponsor on 203 other bills which have become law.

SUMMARY
It is incorrect to state that Bernie Sanders never sponsored a bill that became law. He penned a total of three bills which were enacted as law, although two of those simply renamed post offices. Sanders is listed as a co-sponsor on over 200 pieces of legislation.
