Best light coverage/distance for 1000w hps

so I have a 5x5 tent I use about 3.5x4 because of my AC and Dehuey. I have about 7 plants all trained and topped so there very bushy (All different strains) under there now. Biggest plant is 18" smallest is 13". I put the smaller ones in the middle on the bigger ones on the sides. My light is about 16" away from the glass to the canaopy of the small ones in the middle. My hood is aircooled and room has a lot of ventilation. I feel like I could bring my light down another 4-6 inches without it burning my tops but I feel like if I do that I'll lose light coverage to plants on the sides. But at the same time the distance it's at right now I feel like the most outer edges of the canapy aren't getting too much light. Would you guys recommend me raising the lights a few inches to it has a bigger footprint and covers everything or leaving it as it is? I feel like if I lower the light the 2 plants in the middle would receive it all the light. The way I test the foot print is putting my hand on top of the canopy and moving it away from the center and seeing the brightness start dimming off my hand. Any help and input would be appreciated!

A 1000w has a good penetration so raise it to get the best even coverage. You don't want too much intensity in the centre at the cost of less on the outer edges. If you raise it you should be good to slap another in the corner as long as the air flow is good in those corners. Hand test it for heat and light levels once raised

Yeah my plants shouldn't get over 2-3 ft after there done so I'd still get good covererage and the penetration should get most of the plant since there not super tall right? How much penetration does a 1000w have from the bulb? I know it covers a 4x4 to 5x5 area but I never know how deep it penetrated

I only ever used 1000w a few times over 20 years ago but I seem to think its around 4-5 feet of good penetration. I used 600w for a long time and they are about 3-3.5 feet possibly more. Penetration also comes down to how much a plant moves with the fans with single source lights like HPS. The more a plant moves the less shading and better lower bud development.
