For hydro or dirt? For hydro....
Small RW cubes, keep them watered to 15-20g wet and they work perfect. RRs also do the job.

someone told me worm casting innoculates roots and is the best thing to germinate with. it will help the plant naturally protect itself vs diseases and pests more than normal is what i imagine.

I have started seeds in Jiffy pucks, and in solo cups of Fox Farms Ocean Forest soil, and or Roots organic soil. I have started seeds in coco, but it is easy to lose the seed...had quite a few sink farther into the coco than they could grow up before they started to die, so I don't recommend a solo cup of coco, but a small cup of soil does great...or the JIffy pucks.
I haven't used Rockwool personally...not even for hydro...It just seems too picky for my style of laziness...

The jiffy cubes or cups of soil are by far the easiest...
Watch out though, I got some that were coco pucks and supposed to be So much better than the JIffy pucks, they cost more and they sucked...they just dried out too fast or something...I don't know, but they just didn't work as well as the plain old cheap jiffy peat pucks.
