Best solution?

I'm wondering, I want to get more light to the lower portions of my plants. I currently have 3 cfls on 3 plants in veg stage. I am getting more lights in a few days to help, but the plants are still too bushy (much less of a problem then stretching, but they need more light). I wanted to trim the edges of the leafs off, but my brother wants to chop branches off, which would be the better solution?
