What he said.
To be fair, as far as TGA is concerned I have only grown out Querkle, Vortex and Jilly Bean. I have grown out 9-10 other strains from other breeders. Due to my small grow space, I can only keep 4 mothers, and Jilly is at the top of my list! I call this pheno Orange Poop. Very dank stuff. Querkle is also on that list, although I wish mine had a stronger grape flavor. Still, it's a really nice Urkle-dominant pheno that turns all sorts of nice colors in flower. Also dank stuff.
Everyone raves about Vortex. I didn't have any luck with mine. First four seeds were all male. One out of the next three was a female, she was healthy and grew well, but she never had much of a smell. Even after it dried and cured for a month, not much smell and next to no taste. And I hated the high, it was a muddy hybrid high that mad me feel kind of down and sad, then an hour or two later I would crash on the couch. I didn't touch it for 6 months then out of curiosity, I opened up a jar. There was a slight Pink Lemonade smell, which became much more pronounced when ground up. Unfortunately, it still tasted like burning leaves and still had a muddy high. Chopped. I don't want to slam Vortex in any way, it was likely just a sub-par pheno and the only female I had.
And that's my point... Sub's gear aren't true-breeding IBLs, there will likely be a variety of pheno's and you will have to find one you like. Likely most of the phenos will be at least good, but some won't be and some could be great. My two Jilly Bean females looked like completely different plants. One had a Sativa structure and an unreal orange zest smell to it during flower... even the juice from the fan leaves smelled intensely orange! The other pheno was much smaller, grew much slower, and was more Indica in stature. She had a very industrial, artificial chemical smell that was really nice and unique in it's own way, it just didn't compare to the other pheno's orange dankness. The high was still very nice and very similar to the Sativa... perhaps even a bit stronger. But I culled her and kept the Orange Poop pheno.
If you don't get a great pheno the first time out, don't get impatient or angry, just try again. It's a numbers game. You're playing a kind of genetic lottery, you can never know EXACTLY what you're going to get with any one seed unless it's femmed.. or is an IBL (even then there is some variation). If you DO get a great pheno, keep it alive as a mother because you may have a hard time finding her again!
Again, Jilly Bean is by far my favorite smoke at this time, by a large margin actually. I'm running the Apollo-13 BX now (closely related to Vortex) and hope to find a killer pheno this time, if not I may go on to try a different lineage of TGA gear.
