Best time to trim?

on my first grow almost 17 days into flowering and I'm not exactly sure when the best time to start trimming is. I started cutting a couple fan leafs but I read online if you trim too much in one day you'll stress your plant

(And yes I know tin foil sucks ass but it's only temporary)

Trim... Prune?? ... You trim the day of harvest. You prune when it will be beneficial usually when you flip give or take a week or so and possibly twice throughout that window
Technically cutting fan leafs off is considered trimming if you look up the actual definition but I understand

If it gets real bushy and needs to be trimmed. I just pop off a few fans. I had one years ago that just kept on bushing out and I did 3 pretty major trims on it. Even in later flower. Mostly. I just snap off a few fans here and there to let the light through. And any unhealthy leaves that are mostly brown. Some do it as part of their grow style. I just do it if it seems like it would benefit the plant. Sometimes I just let them fall off.

What's a good number of fan leafs to chop off without stress? I just been cutting 3 leafs off a day to be safe but shit is a Christmas tree :/

LOL if it's so vigorous it's like a Christmas tree it will recover fast. Reminds me of that one plant. It was a beast. Finished in exactly 8 weeks from popping soil. It was just an auto, Dinafem Roadrunner I think in Miracle Grow no less. And it was just unstoppable. Just dont go crazy. Only trim if they look unhealthy/damaged or you need more light on lower branches. Or, there are people here that do radical trimming like lollipopping and all that and swear it focuses the plants energy on the buds. Most strains are pretty Hardy tho and will recover whatever you do. I am sure some are sensitive too.

This is strain dependant. Some can take a lot of pruning without any stress at all and others are really sensitive....

If youre in veg still it doesnt matter too much if you stress them out a little by pruning too much... youll let them recover before flowering right?

I would do what budzbuddha suggested... trim up the bottom real well and maybe thin out some in the middle. Maybe 10 to 15%. Dont go crazy after taking out the bottoms. If you stress them they may slow down for a bit but they will come back.

You might want to thin out the middle a bit again during first week of flower. But after that i leave them alone unless scrogging...dont want to stress/stall em in flower... and lose bud production

Week 4 in flower remove all that lower foliage and anything not getting light you will be very happy with the results

Remove everything you want to at one time... No reason to limit what you pull by any specific number of leaves.. The "stress" talk is bs.
