Good afternoon all, have been lurking around here for a while and just wanted to say what a extremely helpfull and informative corner of the interwebs you have got here :)

Anyway, I have been reading up on growing for a while and last week I took the plunge and bought this kit off ebay for £180. The kit included -

600w HPS Sunmaster bulb w/ ballast + reflector

250w blue cfl, 300w blue cfl and 300w red cfl all with hangers

nutrients - ionic soil grow, bud blood, bloombastic & clonex

3 timers & loads of reflector foil

I have just started to germinate 4 pick&mix seeds (trainwreck, lsd, super lemon haze & cheese. all fem) I was just wondering if you guys could give me a brief guide where to go from here. I have read loads of guides online but everyone seems to have different ways of doing things.

I have put the seeds in damp kitchen roll on a plate with a bowl on top, then put it in my cupboard. two of the seeds are starting to break open after 24hrs. The other two are not showing yet.

When they are all germinated and have put them into their designated pots, do I then put them straight under a blue light or wait for them to grow a bit first?

When is the best time to use the different lights? I know that blue is for growth and red is for flowering, but when do i use the HPS? and when do i switch lights?

Also some advice on when to use the different nutrients would be much appreciated.

Sorry to sound like a complete noob, but I really want to get this right first time and thought confirming everything with you guys would be the best idea.

Cheers in advance

Are you using a grow tent or have you fixed up your own grow room? Once yor seeds are planted put them under your blue light on a 20/4 or 18/6 light cycle to start its life. I use my 400w hps bulb all the way but if you have other lights then why not use them.Leave off the nutrients for a week or so, some say longer. Its up to you. When your changing to flower change over t your other bulb as you know and set timer at 12/12. Your nutrients should tell you what is for stimulating growth in buds or which is just for plant growth. I use the bio bizz range, bio grow during veg then start to add a bit of topmax 10day before beginning to flower then start addin my bio bloom and cut back to about 1ml with the bio grow. When it says between 1 and 5ml per litre of nutrients I start off at 3 and workk up to 5 feeding every 3 days or so giving nutes every feeding. I would imagine that most nutes tend to work in the same way only some give better results. This is some guidlines only mate from what I know works but everybody has their own ways, dont be scared to try your own thing as your plants can handle alot more than you imagine. If you havnt already got a fan or any odor control, you can get a great 4" TT extractor fan and carbon filter from ebay,(kitbagshop) for £55 best price youll find m8 and a definate necessity.
Drop a line if u get stuck.

Ok, I'll Bite. First off, don't put them under the HID light until they are at least 3-4 inches tall and and have 2+ sets of leaves. And don't put it any closer then 24" from them-even if heat isn't a problem the intensity of the light can bleach out the leaves on young plants. They also tend to suck the water out of the top soil fast, and a young plant needs that water since it's roots haven't had time to dig deep.

I personally like to veg my plants on an 18/6 light cycle for at least 4 weeks. You can actually use any spectrum to veg with, it's just that the blue works better. A mix of the two is optimum, so your in good shape. With your light set up I would plan to start off with just the red and blue cfls for the first few weeks of veg, then add the 600w when they are around 5" tall and have been transplanted into their final pots. Veg for however long you want, then switch all the lights to 12/12- once again, the mixed spectrums you have are the best way to go.

As for nutes- If you are using good quality potting soil you really don't need to give the plants any nutes until they are at least 3-4 weeks into vegging. The soil should have plenty, and adding anything but water is likely to give you a case of nute burn. I usually start off with half strength veg nutes about the end of week 3 and slowly build up with each watering. I use a nute, nute, heavy watering cycle (the indoor equivelant of making it rain) from then until harvest, and start mixing in my blooming nutes around the middle of week two of flowering. Note- nutrients vary a lot, and I am not a fan of most of the nutrient mixes that are marketed towards cannabis growers. Most of them are way to high in P compared to N when it comes to flowering because they are trying to push bud production, but the P doesn't do you any good if there isn't enough N to keep your plants leaves healthy. I personally use a 7-9-6 (that also has all the other micronutes) during late veg/early flowering supplemented by a 10-30-20 bloom nute later on. Total cost was just under $20, and i get plants that stay green and healthy right up until harvest.
