Breeders Need Your Advise

Okey, here's the situation....

I started with bagseeds and out of these came 2 phenotypes. One is Indica dominant and the other is Sativa dominant.

During the grow, the indica got seeded (I must have missed a pollen sack, dont see any nanners) and also partially pollinated the Sativa.

Anyway, currently I'm growing those seeds. The indica offsprings are alright what's really surprising is the sativa offspring. Its indica dominant and doesnt resemble either the Sativa or the Indica parents. Its a strain by itself.

At 5 weeks old
- leaves color are greyish blue?
- the leaves are about double the size compared to its step-siblings
- it's short, about 7 inches high with 8-9 nodes
- each node has side branches/shoot growing but stayed closer to the stem
- stem is closer to 1/2 an inch thick and have pronounced ridges (not the usual rounded stem)
- leaves are currently producing nine fingers (parents highest is 7 which is rare)
- and its a stinker, it smells like when you smoke a joint.

In my opinion, its a perfect plant for closet grow or even SOG or single cola grow and I would like to keep this strain going.

My problem is, I only have 1 grow space and its a closet. Currently I have 9 plants in a closet . No other option for additional grow space.

Having said that, I dont mind sacrificing the rest of my plants just to get some seeds from this strain. So my game plan is....

a) If it's a female (came from both female plants), I'll have to find a way for the plant to self-pollinate and if it pollinates the other plants so be it.

b) If it's a male, I'm thinking of letting it drop its pollen and get the rest of my plants pollinated. Get some clone(male) going and cross it again to female offspings from my other plants. I guess until I have this strain stabilize and producing females.

This would be my first attempt to breed so to speak, appreciate any word of wisdom. Thinking of flipping at the end of 6 weeks.

the one on the left of the screen is the cross between the Indica and Sativa and havent been top
the original Indica and Sativa came from the same bagseed
so technically, both seedlings came from the same stock/genetics
the one on the left of the screen doesnt remotely resemble either parents.

What's the best way to keep a strain other than cloning?

What you are seeing are the recessive genes in the plant. It's a lot like people, There might not be a red head in the mix for a long time...then bam..someone has red hair. (it's either recessive or the cable guy..LOL)

Can you clone/have you cloned before? If so, I would ID/name the plant(s)....take clones....and mark those clones respectively. When the clones are rooted up/preserved....throw the parent into 12/12 and see what sex you truly have here.

I would then just try to keep things going. It takes awhile. If you have to (aka....you run out of room before the parents finish), clone the clones again. This will give you the time needed to see if there's any funny biz gonna go on during flower/etc.(they herm)...and will allow you to sample the bud and see if it truly is something special before seeding a bunch of plants. Many/most plants reek early on...but it's what they come out like and how they perform in the pipe that matters, IMO.

Should it be killer/a keeper/etc....keep cuts and give STS/selfing a try. You need 2 stable cuts.....one to spray and make a dad...and one for dad to fuck. nyuk,nyuk. The resulting seeds will be a copy of what you have.

Also keep in mind the original bagseeds might not have the same "dad". Odds are they are the result of a hermie in a grow room. There could have been two hermies in that room.

As too larry says...the reality is that you have bagseeds and absolutely no idea of lineage...therefore...if you are truly interesting in "breeding" these plants...you would start by growing that clone out at least 3 times from clone to bud to see if it remains stable before proceeding. I know of folks who had great runs a few times and then..BAM..out of nowhere...herms. I guarantee the last thing you or anyone else wants is unstable, hermie-prone seeds.

Last year I grew out two kinds of bag seed. I named them Bag Seed Tester 1 & 2. BST2 was huge and full of pretty god bud, but had worm and bud rot problems. BST1 was smaller, but had no problems to speak of. And the bud was a little headier. None of those plants hermied.

I had not saved a BST1 male, so I crossed it with a BST2 male. Grew out some of those seeds in a Fall/Winter seed test, and one of the plants was a hermie. This year I was growing out some more of them, so I'll see what happens. Had 3 males so far, and 2 females.

Yes, I'm serious about breeding. In my mind, I'm already thinking that in the next few grows, I'll focus on keeping this strain (unless a miracle happen to legalization). I'm no stranger either to breeding programs (not cannabis), so it's something I'm willing to try.

So let me get this straight...

1. Clone the strain let the current grow do the normal grow.
2. Do this 3 times, each time clone the strain. Purpose is to observe any undesirable/desirable traits of this strain.
3. If its a keeper, make 2 clones, one is the stud and the other is the bitch and have them a toga party.

I can do that. However, what if this plant is a male to begin with? Though it's highly probable that it's a girl. But what would I do if it has balls?

And pardon my ignorance but what is STS?

One of the reasons you will have to clone multiple times is because by the time the parents flower out (2 months+)...the first clones you took would be huge. Cloning them again and resetting their size will allow you TIME to see what is up with the parents. Folks don't realize how labor intensive, time intensive, and how much space is required to "work" a line for breeding. It isn't about simply crossing plants if you do it properly.

If the plant is a male...consider it an omen. LOL. Seriously....there are previously worked/stable genetics to work with out there. Don't waste time starting with bag seeds. Buy 2 decent crosses and do some playing with those or find some tried and tested clone-only strains and play with those.

if you are serious about this...read this book. It will open your eyes...bigly. "Breeding" is way above what most guys are doing today. Way. It takes YEARS, not weeks....

This....is my primary problem, where I am at, its still a guerilla grow so to speak. Its not the cost of the seeds/clones that worries me, its the risk in ordering them.

I'm fully aware what it takes to do proper breeding and the fundamentals of Mendelian theory. The concept of in-breeding and out-breeding is nothing new to me. I've done it with animals but not with plants. lol

So this....getting something "different" spark the breeding interest in me even if it means I have to sacrifice my normal operation/grow. After all its just for personal use only.

So even if its a male, I dont mind crossing it again with both the Sativa and the Indica and see which of the two carries the red hair gene or have an affair with the cable guy. One of them better confess

There are a number of US based seed banks now...no CUSTOMS or green tape involved...and very little risk....other than losing your $$. DON'T order seeds from anyone anywhere if you can't afford to possibly lose the cash. Unfortunately...not only is the Gov't our enemy...so are some of our peers. I've ordered seeds from across the pond many times over the last 20 years or so and have never had an interception. However, now all of my purchases are stateside.

And seriously....when I hear our "leader" talk of nuclear this and nuclear that...I just can't find a way to give a fuck about "laws"...plant counts...or any of the other "No's" the fuckers toss at us. Fuck them. Fuck that.
