be careful of cheap generators...they use cheap mass produced engines from china that have a tenancy to not work when you need them to...if you are really concerned with keeping your power going during a power outage...get a Honda :)

trying to find one right now in the 200.000 price range, ill prolly go with honda even if it cost me more. To run the 600 watt/fan combo I described can I go with a 1000 or 1500 watt version?

Go with a smaller generator and get a good battery back up. I've done micro-hydro/solar/wind generators on off grid places before. If you keep a good bank of batteries to store the power you won't need to generate as much.

ie. 1000w light on 12hr's a day = 12000w. To get these 12000 watts we can
a. use a generator with +1000w per hour for 12 hours ( and lose any extra charge, and not use energy during the times the grow room is out.)
b. use a smaller generator +500w per hour for 24 hours with a good battery bank

If you use the battery storage system you will not only need to generate less energy at peak times, the energy generated during nighttime will be saved to be used during the next day.

Just to give you an idea, we converted a 4kw generator to a 1kw generator with battery banks. This allowed them to spend less on a generator, improve efficiency and also have less reliance on instantly consumable fuels (IE. diesel if your using a diesel generator)

I highly recommend if your putting in a back-up system for your ladies, check the loads of your whole home, and try to calculate as a whole, it generally less expensive and time consuming to install then people think.

haha..yeah you can check on craigslist too to see if anyone has one for sale...before you buy one used though ask how much its been used and ask them to fire it up...if it fires up first shot and doesn't require fucking with its probably in good condition.

Also as a note, just because you have a generator doesn't mean you can let it sit and not be used...engines don't like to sit there doing nothing, so to better maintain it start it up every couple months and let it run for 10-15 mins just to keep things lubed up...also change the oil yearly...if you want to depend on it, you have to give it the love and care it needs :)

I'v come up with something a little more practical for my situation and would like to know how you think it will work. the battery backup would just be for the light cycle...could I stick a flourescent fixture in there instead of kicking out the money for a genorator...i'v lived where im at for 15 years off and onand we never had a power outage that lasts over 6 hours. I figure a little bit of light is better than no light when the light cycle gets interupted. If anything it would reduce the stress

for starters, you wont be running it in the grow room so you will need an extension cord long enough to get outside.how about a powerstrip on the end o the cord?where I live we get ice storms every 5-10 yrs that can knock out power for up to a week so I bought 1 like that 10 yrs ago.it will burn about a gallon of gas every 12 hrs or so & is prefect for my needs.as I replaced appliances over the yrs,I put in outlets in basement & ran plugs down so now I can run a 25 foot cord into basement andpower any appliance i need. during last outage,I would get up,fire generator up,plug it into kitchen outlet & have toaster, microwave & coffee maker going for breakfast.then move it to fridge&,deepchest freezer for an hour2x a day.dishwasher, cloths washer & dryer when needed and end the day on the TV and lights.it gotten me through 2 outages( 1st was over a week) like stated b4, I run it spring and fall every year.
