learned in the 9th grade cali has an issue with a 100 yr cycle small quakes and then a giant one that fucking destroys everything. but the 1906 measured 7. something and killed 3,000 people. so it would mean they are over due if it does happen

Los Angeles (CNN) -- "A swarm" of several hundred earthquakes, the strongest measuring a 5.5 magnitude, were centered east of San Diego near California's border with Mexico on Sunday afternoon but caused little damage, seismologists said.
Sunday's shaking in Southern California's Imperial Valley was the most activity recorded there since the 1970s, according to U.S. Geological Survey seismologist Lucy Jones.
"We are having a swarm," Jones said. "We expect thousands of events (like this) over several days."
In Brawley, the town closest to the center of the swarm, a Fire Department dispatcher said there were no reports of injuries so far. Brawley is about 100 miles east of San Diego and about 200 miles southeast of Los Angeles.

Only minor damage had been reported, said Robert Graves, another USGS seismologist.
Graves told reporters that about 300 quakes had been recorded by Sunday evening. More than 30 had a magnitude over 3.5, and the biggest "are a little bit larger than what we have seen in these types of processes in the past."
Graves said the area is a "zone of transition" between the Imperial and San Andreas faults and tends to have more frequent earthquake activity than other parts of California. He said that previous swarms -- some of which were recorded as early as the 1930s -- weren't precursors to a bigger quake, but "that's not to say it won't happen."
"At the very least, use this is a reminder: We live in earthquake country," he said. "If we're going to have an earthquake, it's as likely today as it is tomorrow or next week. So the message here, if nothing else, is make sure you're prepared, you have your emergency kit, your emergency supplies and know what you're going to do."

The '06 quake had a magnitude currently quoted at 7.9 (with some estimates as high as 8.2). The 1989 "Pretty Big One" at Loma Prieta south of San Jose had a magnitude of 6.9. Keep in mind that each unit magnitude is exponential, and the exponent is steep" thirty. So 1906 had thirty times the punch of its 1989 successor.
I don't know why everybody thinks LA is such a huge quake risk. The Hayward fault in the east Bay is considered overdue for a Kobe-category event. And the day when the Cascadia Subduction Zone lets go, we'll have an Indian Ocean-caliber tsunami in our corner of the world. The biggest quakes are subduction-zone events, like Valdívia, Chile 1960 (the biggest recorded at 9.6) and Anchorage 1964 (9.2). That last was offshore, and although ground motions in Anchorage were slow (max 0.18 g) it still did a lot of damage. cn

I came to the state in early '90 ... missed the '89 shaker. i've only felt minor quakes, and I've never been to, or inclined to go to, a quake party. cn
I've been to a Quake LAN party

Back in the LA quake in the 90's...hell yeah party! No school, don't wanna be inside...Get out the BBQ and drink all the beers, no electricity ya'll!

I slept through the Northridge quake in 1994, a 6.7, most memorable earthquake and I was asleep the whole time.

I think it's pretty hyped up in the media. I can't even remember the last time I felt an earthquake, they're cool as shit when you do though, sort of surreal. I'd imagine a hurricane or tornado would be much scarier.

Also never heard of a quake party

I remember the Landers earthquake of 1992 ... our house in Sunnyvale was creaking and popping for about half a minute not long after 5am that June morning. It woke me up. While the quake occurred at 4:457 am, it affected my area at about 5:03, which is consistent with the speed of seismic waves in surface rock.
Minutes later, a colleague's dad's pool in Idaho, which happened to be aligned with the quake's origin, developed a three-inch slosh that went back&forth for a few minutes ... and that was in Idaho. cn

Growing up in Fl we would always have hurricane parties lol I like the fact that at least we know when a storm is coming our way, earthquakes seem scarier to me cause bam they just hit you without warning ;) lol

I've only ever actually consciously experienced one earthquake, I think it was a 4.0-5.0, I was sitting in a chair and all of a sudden the ground started moving, no joke, like liquid. A very unusual experience! You don't feel scared really, it's more like "holy shit! What the fuck is happening? This is awesome!!". I'd imagine if the building you were in was collapsing around you it would be pretty terrifying! It was like 25-30 seconds, just like you were sitting on a waterbed. What's scary to me are the aftermath photo's, like of the freeway collapsing and apartments buildings crushing people.

Honestly, quakes aren't shit unless you live in a city or shitty structure. I guess it's pretty unfortunate LA is where it's at, when the huge quake comes, a lot of people in the city will probably die..

Im from the East Coast too, I was just about to fill everyonin on the hurricane partiese

Oh and about the comment that earthquakes are kind of fun to be in... I've always said that to my friends. They think I'm crazy, but it would be like a life size Fun House. Like the ones at Fairs and Carnivals.

I was still in the womb during the 89 quake ...
I've only felt about 7 minor quakes in my lifetime living in nor cal

I was outside with my dog during the last one a couple months ago and she started barking and ran over to me a good 15 seconds before the quake hit

I don't know. I've heard stories of great quakes in both Chile and Alaska. When the ground liquefies heaves and your house "floats" on it until Pac-Manned by a momentary fissure, you're at nature's mercy. cn
