My friend has had good results growing in the ground which is caliche. I am always surprised as it doesn't seem ideal, but the plants are always healthy. Over the years he has used different types of ferts as an additive.

How is Caliche and growing?

Usta live in Belair and Caliche soil was great for apricot.

Was wondering if you need anything besides Caliche and water to yield competitive bud?

“Caliche (/kəˈliːtʃiː/) is a sedimentary rock, a hardened natural cement of calcium carbonate that binds other materials—such as gravel, sand, clay, and silt. It occurs worldwide, in aridisol and mollisol soil orders”.

You don't want that man. You're going to want a medium that's more acidic and a better environment for microbes and all the good little guys. More like peat or something. I've actually used dirt right from the vegetable garden with alright results. But my garden also grows epic vegetables because of all the elemental sulfur and Chicken fertilizer and compost I turn into it year after year. I got a little greedy a couple years ago and about half the corn sprouts burned to death but the ones that made it oh man lol.
