hello all, not quite certain where to post this? I am looking to purchase a decent camera capable of taking close up photos of ganja. I only have an I-phone at this time and don't use it for ganja photos as all that smart technology causes me concern.

I'm hopeing someone can point me to what type of camera they use for such purposes? I know next to nothing about cameras and would like one I cold take good close ups and also outdoor shots of full plants.

if anyone has any ideas of certain models point me in the right direction. I imagine I would need one that I could change the lens for real close (macro?) shots. so if anyone has a god camera they love and would recommend please help me with ideas. thanks muchly :)

Careful, photography is addictive.

Ideally, you'd like a DSLR. With that you can either use special macro lenses, or extension tubes like I use.

Both ways allow you to put the lens right up close to the object being photographed. All lenses have a MFD, or minimum focal distance. This number is the closest your lens can be to the object and still be able to properly focus. Extension tubes go between the camera and lens, and allow you to put the lens right up on your buds. Purpose built macro lenses do the same, but with tubes, you can use your existing lens.

Ill post a couple shots I took of my buddy's God Bud I took the other day.

I use a Canon 5DmkII, Canon 24-70 f/2.8, and Kenko extension tubes.

I brought my camera to his place, so I wasn't using the lighting I'd normally use for macro, but here's a couple:

I use a t3i and the canon rebel series is good prosumer grade shit. The stock lens it comes with can focus up to 8 inches i think i know its under a foot.

But yeah dslrs are the shit.Used lenses and converter rings and old school lenses really help save money so you can afford the body.

wow thanks fellas! very nice shots as well.

@CBR420RR- beautiful shots thats exactly like i would like to be able to take. i will look into the DSLR. when buying a lens to take macro shots or realy close ups what should i look for? are the extension tubes much cheaper than a macro lens? which one would work better? or are they quite similiar? again your shots look real nice.
i'm completly new to photagraphy but it has always been something i had wanted to get into and i've a few bucks to spend to play. just uncertain about the equipment. i like your shots they are perfect.

@JM66- your camera takes nice shots as well but it is a smart phone? i'm guessing. i do have a i-phone which takes ok shots but not macro like i would like it to. also i am a little worried about posting photos from a smart phone as i heard they can be traced? i don't know the whole story with them but i'm thinking i will stay away from using it for ganja shots and look for something like the DSLR that was recomended.

thanks for the help guys

Thanks alot for the compliment.

A good macro lens will get you better results, but they're also relatively expensive.

For someone like me, ill probably spend the $1000 and get the Canon 100mm f/2.8L. It's an awesome macro lens, but it/they have some drawbacks. They're usually "prime". No zoom. One single focal length. They're big relative to their flexibility. They're expensive.

I bought extension tubes because they were like $30, and I could put them in between my $1600 lens that I already have.

Now that I know I'm into macro, it's time to get a lens.

If you are going to get into photography mainly for macro, I suggest getting a DSLR body and a macro lens. This will give you the best initial results, and get you on a good path to proper photography.

My suggestion:

Any Canon Rebel Eos. Don't worry about MP. Anything over 12MP is perfect.

Canon EF100mm f/2.8. $500

google that lens, and look at the result.

Anything else, ask away.

I remove my sunglasses from my head. and hold my phone up to the sunglasses. shoot through the sunglasses. The sunglasses are method 7 and they are $150 but well worth it.
