i don't know much about cameras, except that my ballasts are interfering with my pics.

what cameras or what functions am i looking for? (fast shutter speed, etc..)

Turn off Your grow lights, use flash or other outside light. I would go with lower shutter speed, some outside lights (non HPS) or camera flash

I'm personally a fan of Nikon Coolpix for plant pictures. They range in price from very affordable for point and shoot and get higher priced for more features, but the ones I like the best have a 1mm macro focal length and the option to set the white balance allowing you to adjust for the usually odd lighting inside a tent or other indoor grow area. In order to get good pictures, getting the lighting right is everything. And being in focus helps :)

It's the magnetic ballast. I got one of each a lower quality htg supply 400w magnetic and a higher quality hydrofarm phantom 600w ballast. My phantom doesnt do it but the magnetic does. It's either low quality ballast or just magnetic ones in general. I get pretty decent pics with my note 3 camera lol.

I always just use an MH bulb. Or natural light with a flash. Never use HPS. even floros are good. I never understood why HPS has those crazy lines.

cause mag ballast operate at 60 hz (50 hz in europe) used to see similar lines in old TV's when you aimed a camera at em cause the vertical circuits also ran at 60 Hz

the HPS lights look like that because of the way the arc fires

When I shoot plant pics, I turn off the grow lights and use a small shop light mounted up next to the plant. This is especially good when the trichs start showing up in flowering.

Force the camera to flash and you will get some amazing pics. I use an iphone and Nikon D5000 with a Sigma 70-300. Then Photoshop to bring out the best in the pic.
