Can I plant two different strains in the same planter?

Hey guys,

I planted one strain (Pineapple Chunk) on Sept. 5th & another (unknown) strain on Sept. 30th. The unknown strain was a seed given to me by a friend, so I thought I'd just see if it would sprout, and sure enough it did.

I've included a picture. As you can see, they both seem to be coming along just fine. The Pineapple Chunk is in a big planter, whereas the unknown strain is in a white styrofoam cup. I just dug a little hole in the soil, and planted the cup in there, so that the unknown strain could share the light.

But I was wondering....would it be safe to plant the unknown strain into the same planter as the Pineapple Chunk (without the styrofoam cup)? So basically we're talking two plants in one container using the same soil/medium.

For sure.

Also, the planter the Pineapple Chunk is now planted in is the final planter it will live out it's life in, so transplanting is not an issue. I only mention that because I thought it might be a possibility that the roots might become entangled, making a transplant strenuous & stressful for the plants.

Than there is the possibility of each plants roots competing for nutrients. That's really what I'm concerned about. I just want to know if it's been done, and if so how did it turn out.
 
Yes , the roots will grow together and tangled making it really hard to transplant there after. As for the roots competing for nutrients, I dont see that being an issue, at least no more than space if you were to keep them potted the way they are currently.
 
Generally a bad idea. If those were clones from the same plant and you wanted to build a fast flowering container that would probably be fine.... but
What happens if one turns out to be a male? Then you gotta cut it and now you've got half a container unflilled with plant material; only half the bud sites remain. Half a harvest sucks.
Go with one plant one pot unless you know what you've got already. Competition for nutrients won't be an issue it's just if you need to separate them later in you are pretty much fucked. Plus giving them some room allows more bud sites to grow. More bud = good :hump:

You should not ignore this OP. If you need to remove, It may not be good to have a load of decaying roots near the remaining plant either.

Curiosity is a bitch ;p. If you have the space maybe keep it separate, take some cuttings and try to sex it for next run.
