I have 4 of the bigger sized rockwool cubes and there starting to get algae. but not only that I figure more root space wouldn't hurt either, so i figured i could kill 2 birds with one stone and transplant the rockwool into 5 gallon buckets and cover them with another medium. is it possible to do this and if it is what is the best medium?

I use the big 6" blocks all the time. I cover them with block covers and algea is never a problem. I grow plants all the way to harvest in the 6" blocks and get about 2 1/2 to 3 ozs. off each girl.Lots of room and always big, sweet, sticks buds.

yea i used the 4x4x6in blocks, from start to finish. to prevent algae i just used hydroton balls to cover the rockwool a bit, and since it was DWC, the roots had unlimited space to grow.
