i know i can flower with it and i know metal halide is the way to go but this whole project has been one big money pit so i just wanna use the hps and my led 90w quad spectrum light together and veg if possible
can i veg with a 400w hps by htg supply?

You can. Plants won't be as compact and dense, but should be fine. Is your ballast digital? A 400W MH bulb at lowes is 30 bucks.

Magnetic ballast conversion bulbs are more. I have an electric ballast and it takes whatever bulb I want to put in it.

It's warm to the touch, yes. I wouldn't carry it like I was scoring a touchdown, that's for sure. I keep it on the top shelf made of wood. Doesn't heat up anything around it at least since it's covered in heat sinks so I don't fear any fire hazard or anything.

I only have one 400w hps, for both veg and flower. May not be ideal but seems fine.
