Can some buds be too dense and large that hanging them as they are is risky ?

My drying environment seems to be perfect. 48% and about 19 degrees.

thinking about cutting up some of the biggest colas just to safe

growing them as they are is more risky ime. i never had mold during drying but gotten mold during ripening with too dense buds.

I don’t think I’ve ever had problems with mold while drying, unless there was mold to begin with. Bottom line, do it if you want, it won’t hurt anything.

48% is too dry for proper slow drying in my experience. I try to be around 60% and no lower than 55% during the whole dry.

Havent had too much of an issue with colorado himidity and big tops. Takes 6 days max or so. Id be mire worried about jar burping mold wise.

break down the larger colas to dry
Unless you really want them as one bud, they’ll get disassembled for consumption in the end.
I figure why risk the rot at drying.

Thanks all for advice. Decided to cut them up. Not as pleasing to the eye as a huge donger but at least I can relax without opening 1 up in a couple weeks time and it’s furry.

Thanks for your point I will make a note of that. Going to slow my fan down a bit see if I can raise humidity as it’s dropping daily

What’s a sign of mold inside a bud that’s growing ?

Peel open the buds and look inside, you will see white fuzzy mold most of the time, heavily progressed mold will start turning the buds brown/grey.

i cut large colas up into smaller budlets to dry, i5ts not worth the risk of mould here across the pond

If you see one of those dead leaves and give it a light tug, it will pull out if there is rot inside.

Had some CD-1 Candida kola's that were 17"-19" a few runs ago and not a problem with any of it.
Pulled some Pure Red CBD Auto with a few buds that were 10"-12" and they're being burped as we go... If it's clean going forward, no worries.
Good advice here!
