Can you "read" these trichomes?

I have almost given up on the entire concept of trying to time a harvest based on trichome color because they all look the same to me and never seem to change color with age. My usual rule of thumb is to wait until at least half the hairs are red, brown or dried-up. But anyway, I have some Godfather Purple Kush that has been blooming since approximately late July outside in SoCal. I have already harvested buds to test, and they seem to be pretty powerful, so I'm probably going to cut these plants in the next two or three weeks unless someone gives me a good reason to wait a little longer. These photos are the best I could do with my iPhone.

Kind of, but most of those ambers look like they are on the leaf, not calyx. Follow the pistols to the calyx, if they are still exposed and white or yellow, you need to wait a little longer. As the calyx swells the hair turns red or brown (or another color) Inside the calix the crystals are forming choking off the pistols. These resin swollen calyx's are where the majority of your bud weight and destiny comes from.

I have been pumping honey and molasses into mine and they really swelling now But still white or yellow and no amber trichomes on the calyx, yet.

if you get a jeweler's loupe, you can see a lot more clearly.
you have to turn things until you can see them from the side. if you look at them from directly overhead, a lot of the clears will look milky, because you're seeing the top of the "stalk" it's sitting on, seen from the side, you can see they're still clear.
and always check calyxe trichs, the ones on sugar leaves age faster, and you'll see ambers on leaves weeks before you'll see them on calyxes

Seriously....

The whole point of the grow is the harvest and taking them at the right point.
Why gamble on a guess ?

A simple $7 purchase from amazon or from a host of local places ( coin shops / michaels / craft store / hobby store /etc. ) really is a non problem. As others have stated look at calyx not the leaves.
Look at the pistils ( are they changing color and pulling back ) . Look at different buds .

Don’t base your chop on a SAMPLE smoke. It’s like cooking ... when it’s done it’s done.

A lousy $7 bucks for piece of mind.

I got that exact one. The lights are unreliable, but still totally worth the pittance I paid.
