The Canadian government announced retaliatory tariffs on US goods that look to go beyond the value of US tariffs on imports of Canadian steel and aluminum.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland announced the responsive measures to President Donald Trump's tariffs on steel and aluminum from the US's northern neighbor.

Freeland and the Canadian government pegged the total value of the goods subject to the Canadian tariffs at 16.6 billion Canadian dollars, or roughly $12.8 billion US dollars. Those values are roughly equal to that of the Canadian steel and aluminum exports to the US.

"In response to these measures, Canada intends to impose surtaxes or similar trade-restrictive countermeasures against up to C$16.6 billion in imports of steel, aluminum, and other products from the US, representing the value of 2017 Canadian exports affected by the US measures," Canada's government wrote on its official website.

A spokesperson for the Canada's Global Affairs office also confirmed to Business Insider that the target was to place tariffs on 16.6 billion Canadian dollars.

Good, the Canuks are striking back.

Now we will see what the EU and Mexico do next, and I bet it ain't going too be pretty.

Small wonder it's Trump's strategy: do what has never worked a single time in world history. Not surprisingly, he does that in business as well, which is why he's filed for bankruptcy 4 times now...and will so be doing so a 5th.

The U.S. is already 15 trillion dollars in debt. Were it possible to file for bankruptcy as a nation, we would have done so during the Reagan administration. That asshole put us into so much debt, we've never even come close to recovering from it ever since.

The stupid part is we will all pay more. The USA can not produce enough steel for the demand and Canada has other markets. If Trump doesnt back down by July 1 Happy Canada Day mofos everyone pays more. Fridges stoves cars take your pick of steel thing. What an ultra orange maroon

Oh he is trying to hold Canada over the barrel. But what he is hedging is stupidity. The EU and China and Asia need our high quality steel and aluminum. All consumers will pay more and be sold on how it is good for your nation which is a giant crock of shit.

Canada has been a great trade partner for the USA. We have fought toe to toe with you and lost our sons and daughters with you. The tariff was an insult of the highest order. I used to admonish his ability and now i think he is the giant Nacho jesus that the Liberals derail. I was wrong....they were right.

He is a bully in a sandbox with toys. Hey at least North Korea will love him.

What you are failing to understand is we have other markets. If the deal goes sour we will stop the sale to the USA and move it elsewhere. And your costs will go up more than 25% because of supply and demand. The 25% puts us in market with EU and Australia and everyone else impugned.

Lets charge the 25% on crude too, maple syrup, uranium, gold, platinum, iron ore. The resources here are limitless.

It is childish. Holy crap I think fogdog is right maybe even....sirnapsalot.

And I mean that sincerly. The stupidity of propping up trump is trumptarded.

We produce the steel genius. If you want to buy quality Canadian steel pay more.

Quality aluminum too.

We have the resources and covert them to a higher state. It is commerce.

What I am saying is we can sell our quality steel to other places and Americans will pay more for EVERYTHING with steel or aluminum in it. Thank your nacho president

Here is why I can't just say nothing:

I am a former US Army Infantry soldier. I didn't necessarily enlist to serve my country, but I do love my country very much, as I fought for her, I suffered and continue to suffer for her, and my comrades died for her. I take my oath and my creed very seriously. One thing I will not tolerate is the puppet of a hostile foreign government infiltrating the highest levels of our country's leadership. I can't just turn a blind eye to espionage. Let me remind you: Trump Jr. first stated the meeting with the Russians at Trump Tower was about adoptions, before admitting it was about getting dirt on Hillary, which is collusion. Trump has ties to the Genovese Crime Family and the Russian Mob, and he has since the '70s, at least.

By the way, it doesn't take intelligence to be President, although it should, as well as strong love for the Will and Liberty of the People.
