Also Yessica due to the fact that you are using mmj for mental health reasons your odds a regular doc or psychiatrist would sign are extremely low because of the
Typical policies of mental health professionals and mental health centers not to prescribe drugs of abuse to mental health patients.
They ARE apprehensive to prescribe MMJ for schizophrenia and psychosis, and for in-patient treatment programs. Or probably any kind of program where you have to sign a form saying you will NOT use drugs or alcohol during your time in said program. THAT will need to be changed in the future, in my opinion. At least for MMJ.
Interestingly enough - I have a friend that just got signed on to a rigorous out-patient many-week intensive program for their mental problems, and they are just going to say that they are taking the prescribed drugs - while the whole time being on MMJ. The prescribed drugs made them very ill - same as me.
Psychotic disorders, are not the same as what I personally suffer from (depression and anxiety).
"Psychosis
Psychosis is a serious but treatable medical condition that reflects a disturbance in brain functioning. A person with psychosis experiences some loss of contact with reality, characterized by changes in their way of thinking, believing, perceiving and/or behaving. For the person experiencing psychosis, the condition can be very disorienting and distressing. Without effective treatment, psychosis can overwhelm the lives of individuals and families."
Delta-9 THC has been found to exacerbate psychotic disorders. BUT - other cannabinods (like cannabidiol) have been shown to help psychotic symptoms.
I don't think enough is known about it yet. I was definitely asked on the forms I filled out for a MMJ prescription, and by my doctor, if I had a history of schizophrenia or psychosis in my family.
There has been evidence for the proposed use of MMJ for the treatment of:
- depression
- anxiety
- anorexia nervousa
- PTSD
- Fibromyalgia
I haven't read anything specifically about bulimia - but I can tell you from personal experience that MMJ helped.
I would REALLY love to see a study done, on the use of MMJ (high CBD or another cannabinoids, NO to very low THC) on psychotic or schizophrenic patients.
A lot of people could potentially be helped.
