Carbon filter idea, need opinions before i give it a shot.

I've been looking for a good DIY for a carbon filter and realized either way i would have to start from scratch. Then i took a step into my garage and saw something that i think will make the build very easy. Only issue though is the outlet is 4'' and i would either need a 4'' inline fan or a 4'' to 6'' reducer for my existing inline fan.

Pretty simply really, activated carbon, plus some pantyhose plus this:

are carbon cannisters re-usable?? they look like one time use unless you can open them and change out the carbon?

They're disposable but the csrbon is a good portion of the price. 50 dollars every year or so shouldn't be a factor.
I've read stories of diy filters that the design left it split a seam and distribute carbon all over someone's buds.

I should have gone on to say can / filter combos are matched so contact time is correct.pull air thru carbon thats to thin it won't scrub completely.

here is my DIY carbon scrubber. it has a 6" inlet X 8"w X 30"l, and had 180 oz of premium activated charcoal matted to a 6" 440 cfm fan along with a fan speed controller.

total cost for the scrubber materials at Lowes was 75.00. total cost for the charcoal from amazon was 65.00 (32.00 x 2 packages of 100oz of charcoal). total time to build was 2.5 hrs. the weirdest part was buying 2 pkg of XL queen sized panty hose and the look on the old ladys face at walmart. lol

the white outer cover on the 1st pic has been removed. it was too restricting for the fan and was not evacuating enough tent air. this is how I have it set up: fan/duct/tent/duct/scrubber

I have to say I disagree dbkick, DIY carbon filters can save you hundreds of £$ and be highly effective. Guess it depends on the build quality.

Refilling isnt very tough all you have to do on a lot of them is drill out the rivets, refill with activated carbon from an aquarium store or I got mine from walmart. I had to use 4- 1lb canisters which cost me 3 bucks a piece. I used a chop stick to pack the carbon in and replaced the rivets with self- tappers. The canister I use has wire mesh on the outside which holds the carbon in really well so I pack it pretty tight. the 4lbs more than filled my 18" x 12" w/ 6" inlet. I still have about 3/4's of a can of activated carbon left and no smell in my room.
P.S. I also smoke meds in my room and it takes care of that smell too.

nice job on the DIY, I have made some carbon\cat litter units for my drying area BUT I have found it to be cheaper to buy new carbon filters for the reliable muscle on ebay. Just be carefull which ones your getting. You can easily get a new 6" carbon filter for less than 135.00

I pulled an old exhaust fan out of a bathroom reno I did, hooked it up to a 6" duct hose venting the heat and smell out of my room, and custom made a carbon filter with some 6" duct fittings, chicken mesh, and Honeywell universal Carbon Filter replacement. Works like a hot damn Cost me $20 in parts.

Al this money being spent on carbon? What are you guys planning on scrubbing? Indoor air or exhausted air? I run a carbon filter on my air exchange unit on my furnace for my household air and I use a ozonator for my grows exhaust. If your looking for 100% removal than an inline ozonator is the only thing that actually works. Both my units cost me about $75 a year in maintenance, set up was where the money was. Well worth it IMO or if your on...well no so legal side.
