horizontal, most lights do give off more light from the side... should get a good reflector for it too, or hood, or wuteva you wanna call it

Both. You can hang them on top of the plants and have some hanging at the sides as well. The more light the better.

Great idea but not worth the hassle. cfl bulbs are cheaper than a tin of coke and the time factor. You really want more cfl's just hanging free at the sides and use coke cans on them too.
