Chlorine

So the general rule of thumb is to leave your water out over 24hrs so the chlorine can evaporate.

I've read that sometimes this can't be the case because some water supply companies add chloramines which do not evaporate and will need to be removed using other methods.

So I'm wondering how much chlorine (mg/l) causes a bad reaction to the plant and how much can the plant take before visible effects show? Also if anyone knows what reactions would you expect to see from chlorinated water e.g. Weird unbalanced uptake of nutrients?

Cheers!

1 to 5 ppm is safe
chlorine is a nutrient used by the plant
i add hth pool shock to run a sterile res

I have my water report in my hand now and the chlorine is at 1 ppm so check your local water report and see what yours is. Even in bad water they don't go over 5 ppm of chlorine in a water supply.

I'm a swimming pool professional. Most city tap water has 1-2ppm chlorine added to it. Most living things need some chlorine, and can tolerate quite a bit as a liquid. Chlorine gas is quite deadly.

As mentioned, exposure to air will dissipate it, as will sunlight, and exposure to bacteria, ie algae or swimmers in a pool.

A bucket or large mouth watering can is an effective vessel to de declor your water in 24 hours. Add an airstone to both speed up the process and oxygenate the water. pH correct and add feed after de Chloe

HTH works, but its expensive and messy, and possibly dangerous. I recommend household bleach as long a it is sodium hypochlorite as the active ingredient. Generic cheap bleach is as good as the expensive brand name.

Most of the time 24h in a vessel with the lid of is enuff to dissapate the levels down to a safe level. ........works for me.....

Just add a tiny amount of calcium ascorbate, 5-10 mg per gallon or so, and it turns it to chloride right away. Chloride is a form of chlorine which is usable by plants without killing good bacteria in the medium. Since chlorine levels vary from city to city, basically just add as much as needed to get rid of the chlorine smell. It usually doesn't take much. It's supposed to work on chloramines too. It can be plain ascorbic acid instead of calcium ascorbate, just that calcium ascorbate is neutral pH and stores better.

Chlorine doesn't really hurt anything. If using bottled nutes take a look at the guaranteed
analysis. This is the label on dyna gro bloom. Even in organic soil the chlorine doesn't kill
enough beneficial bacteria to be measured. I'll add a link at the bottom with lab results.

I suppose you're right. If it's safe enough for humans to drink, must be pretty safe. I hate the smell though so the ascorbic is good for a quick fix. Free halogens in general are considered carcinogenic though so probably best to convert to chloride if there's an easy way, either by aging or chemical.

Calcium hypochlorite is what granular HTH is. Builds up TDS, and probably salts, definitely messes with pH. Sodium is clean liquid chlorine, as benign as the chemical can be. We NEVER store calcium hypochlorite indoors because it is highly explosive under easy conditions... wet. Did you know a few drops of water in your jar of HTH, sealed up, becomes a small bomb. More like a Molotov cocktail. Either way, don't mess with granular when bleach is so safe by comparison.

Only thing I ever use bleach for is getting black mold off walls. Full strength bleaches it right out. Stinks like hell though.
