I nave been reading some of these posts and I just had to get on. I've been flooding potplants in lava rock since 1979 and I have studied and learned cheap inexpensive ways to set up an op with no money. Of course you will need some basic handyman skills and a little pateince. For starters two 120v 500 watt hologen light bulbs($5.00) will suffice for the first grow. They have to be operated out of their bonnets however so I twist coat hanger wire on a ceramic block and hook them in series so they can be hooked up to a 240 volt source. These are the type of bulbs used on construction sites. Later when you can afford it I recommend ballasts with built in igniters because the replacement high pressure sodiums that go with these expensive ballast are much cheaper and just as good as the expensive bulbs that have the igniter built in. $60-$80 verses $240-$325. Pumps are easy to make also. Lava rock can be gotten from old propane barbecues(you just have to smash it up a bit and it isn't as pretty and round as the stuff you get from the hydro shop that works just as good). Sometimes landfills and garbage recycling plants seperate items for reuse and with permission you can get some of the things you need from these types of places. I scored over a mile of suspension hydro wire in pieces out of one of these places a few months ago etc...

i am with you on doing it cheap and free. i use home depot or lowes buckets for dwc and just cut a hole in it and place in a net pot. 3.50 verses the 12 bucks at the hydro store. most of the time i just get spackel buckets off a job(free) and i am happy with it. works well for me. so any more cheap tips you have just let me i will be totaly happy to put use to them
