Cloning for first time

is too big of a branch not a good idea? I have a plant about 2 feet tall maybe, very bushy and I wanted to try to clone off of it. It was a clone at one point also is that not a good idea to try to clone from it? And I don’t want to take too big of a branch off and have it not work out should I stick to one with only 3 nodes on it? Also I saw an article that said at least 5 inches and was wondering if that means 5 inches tall or 5 inches in the soil? Any advice would be great.

If your going to top that plant and have space, for sure give it a try. They are easier to clone then a lot of people think. And it will be good experience. Just make sure you use a humidity dome. And a clone of the clone is the same plant. I'm about to harvest a clone only Green Crack that has been cloned for years. Last time I actually just put my cuttings in my 15 gal pots with a humidity dome for the hell of it, and they're happy as hell and now in the veg tent. There are so many ways to clone these things. Anyways, I've always had success when I've cloned the tops. Good luck.

I've cloned cuttings from 2" (total length) to about 12" with success. I've gotten lazy and if I'm not putting the mother into flower for a couple of weeks, I trim off the lowers, dip them in water then rooting powder and stick them in the soil around the mother. If they are thin, I make a hole first with a wooden skewer. I then spray with a dilution of silica a couple of times a day until they show new growth. This way they don't take up extra room and I just pot them up before I put the mother into flower. I have about 75% success rate and as Padawan said, there are many ways of doing it. The clones don't require much light while rooting. I actually think too much light slows them down.

You are taking the lowest branches to clone right? The cutting of 5” sounds about right. Suggest using Mykos WP. Prep your cutting and be sure to lightly scrape off the outer layer of the stem. Dip in honey or cloning gel and then in the Mykos to coat. Place directly in a Dixie Cup of your medium. Keep in weak light but do provide light. No humidity dome as they help make it easy for damping off.

thinking about taking a few clones myself. only ever tried it once to try and save some money but it didn't work out. used a humidity dome etc etc but they still didn't take. what's your success rate & what exactly do you do? I've read multiple posts of ppl saying 45 degree angle, cut with branch under water so you don't get air bubbles in the stem and yadda yadda. so im interested in hearing your's and a few other ppls ways of going about it and your success rates.

I have some cloning gel kicking around here somewhere, also have mykos on hand

Cut the shoot. Never mind the angle. Be sure to lightly scrape off the outer layer of the stem. It will shred. Use the edge of a knife. Dip in cloning gel or honey. Then into Mykos or Great White.

A cup of Black Gold Seedling Mix. Buy it anywhere. Have it moistened but not soaking wet. Use a pencil or screwdriver and make a hole and slip your Mykos coated stem in. That’s it. Keep under low level light. Keep moist. Then be patient. After a couple of weeks check roots. To check root development moisten first and then hold upside down and let it slip out of the cup. Knock the soil off. Then just slip back in. If the vegetation looks sick don’t worry. Keys are not overwatering and preventing damping off which humidity domes almost insure you get.

awesome, thx man! so is the cutting underwater to prevent an air bubble in the stem just a myth? it's safe to just cut off normally then prep?

I’ve never worried about a cut shoot sucking air. There might be something to that but I’ve never bothered. By the way they’ll root in plain old water. Change at least every 2 days. Even in clear glasses they’ll root.

Hi...yes the air bubble thing is real. If you leave a cutting in open air...the leaves transpire and since there's no water...they will suck air into the stem. Think vapor lock...clone will die.

Underwater isn't needed. Just put cutting in water and don't remove it untill ready to place in media. Work quickly and you'll be ok.
