I'm building a spacebucket and wanted to go with a single cob setup, since it seems like a nice balance between efficiency and cost. I'll probably do active cooling since there'll already be a few cpu fans for airflow in the bucket. I don't think Quantum Boards fit in a 5 gallon bucket and I really only need around 50W of light I've watched growmau5's videos, but he focuses on mostly Cree and Vero chips (when he isn't promoting RapidLED). If you guys could help validate my options or tell me if I'm just straight up wrong, I would appreciate it.
5 gallon space buckets are about .070m2 or a square foot (0.092903m2). So if I'm going for at least 1100 ppfd, I'm going to need 102 umol/s. If the cob has an efficacy of 2 umol/J, I'm going to need about 50W to 40W (for .07m2). This puts me in a good range to run a 50v cob at 1A or a 35v cob at 1400mA. Ideally I should be able to dim the cob to about 50% of that for veg growth. Since I'm doing a single cob for both veg and flower, I'm going to want 3500k @ 80-90 cri.
I've been mostly researching CXM22's since everyone seems to say that's the best bang for the buck currently, but I've been contemplating some of the new gen Veros. Although Growmau5 was saying last year the CXB3590s are the best for lower wattage builds.
Now as far as efficacy goes, Luminus states the Horticulture CXM22s get 90-165 umol/s (huge range) at 37v @ 1.1mA. Anything related to Par Watts I was able to find about the normal white cxm22 chips say these chips get 4.4umol/J, which seems really high. Vero's are only 1.9 umol/J (according to the Integrated Sphere results). Even at 90 umols/s, the CXM22 would still get 2.4 umol/J @ 1.1mA.
Whatever the best bet is, I'm hung up on driver selection.
HBG-60-1050 seems to be the go to recommendation for single cob drivers (Assuming it can run a 50v cob?). HLG-60H-48A and LPF-60d-48 for 50v cobs seem like a good choice (I see 48v drivers being recommended for 50v cobs, so I assume this can drive it?). The LPF is almost the same price so HLG is probably better for higher efficiency.
Running a 34v cob with a 48v driver seems inefficient, but maybe someone can correct me. I'm still not sure how close the voltage needs to be to the cob or if there's a danger if you have a 300v driver on a 30-50v cob.
For 34-7v cobs, hlg-60h-36a goes from 1A to 1.7A (1A @ 35 would get me 500ppfd assuming 2 umol/j). Then again, there's the HBG-60-1400. It's not really maxing out the voltage range of the driver, but I'm still not sure if that's a big deal or not.
