Topic and Purpose

The topic I have chosen to write about is the legalization of marijuana for recreational purposes. Here in California voters will be given the chance in November whether or not they feel that the decriminalization of marijuana for recreational purposes is a good idea or not. In 1996 Californians passed the Prop 215 law which allowed for people with a valid doctors recommendation to be prescribed, purchase, and consume marijuana for medical ailments. Over the past 14 years Medicinal Marijuana has become one of California’s premier cash crop bringing in hundreds of thousands of tax dollars every year. If the law is passed in November 2010, any Californian over the age of 21 will be allowed to either purchase cannabis or cultivate their own.
The reason that this idea was brought to the ballot is the fact that California is broke and if cannabis is legalized, it is estimated to bring in over one billion dollars in taxes in the first year alone. I am personally 100% pro legalization for several reasons, the main being that the “War On Drugs” has failed miserably and continues to cost Americans billions in tax dollars every year. The purpose of this paper will be to educate the “John Q Public” about the ins and outs of legalization and why marijuana is a safe recreational intoxicant. This topic will cover both the Pros and Cons and give fair arguments to both.
Thesis

In the next few pages I will discuss the pros and cons of legalizing recreational cannabis. Cannabis has been used for over 3000 years for medicinal and recreational use. In 1937 Congress criminalized marijuana and has been illegal ever since. Even though marijuana is illegal it is the third most popular drug used in the United States next only to alcohol and tobacco. If decriminalized several positive outcome will. I am going to discuss the positive outcomes of decriminalizing marijuana, as well as the negative effects. I will also discuss the federal legal issues that California as a state will have to endure if the law is passed. This paper is designed to educate the common citizen the who, what, where, when and why of cannabis decriminalization.

Paper Outline

My research paper will open with the history of recreational cannabis use in the United States. The main body of the paper will be focused on the left and right side arguments as they pertain to the legalization of cannabis in California and, how it will benefit the economy. I will also include information about why marijuana is a safe intoxicant and not the Dangerous Drug the United States portrays it to be. The paper will include arguments about why marijuana should stay illegal, how employers will be affected and whether or not private marijuana use will be ground for dismissal from ones job. I a lot a small section of the paper to those who will be negatively affected by decriminalization, mainly those who deal marijuana illegally, as well as discuss if marijuana will have any effect on the smuggling of illegal marijuana from other countries. There are so many questions to be asked and so many issues to be addressed and I will to my best to explain them all.

notice how i use the word intoxicant instead of drug.

There are so many questions to be asked and so many issues to be addressed and I will to my best to explain them all.
Instead of the word intoxicant, why not use something with less negative connection like plant? Just a thought
notice how i use the word intoxicant instead of drug.

Looks pretty good man. Some small issues with the flow of the paper but if you print out a copy and read it out loud, you should be able to catch some little stuff.

Red is where i changed stuff. If it sucks, sorry Im high but I tried.

cant thing of anything else but when you state "why marijuana is a safe intoxicant" try to add something like: ,even more so than legalized intoxicants such as alcohol. find some sources and possibly tie in and relate the failure of alcohol prohibition.

just suggestions
