Compost - 2018 medium scale.

Hey folks, lets see those compost piles.


Thinking of starting a semi commercial compost operation to compliment the current landscaping buisness.

Current gear, a mid size excavator, a dump truck, skidsteer . And enough property to make long compost rows .


We have Access to large amounts of free sawdust and chips.

and im on the hunt for a chicken farm but let me tell you fish is also a very free option too. Lots of commercial mackeral fishermen buddies available this time of year .


Ill haveto setup air , probably because i wont be able to leave machines up there to flip piles bi weekly .

Water wont be an issue, their are springs popping up all over the place so we will dig a well .

The location is middle of canada by some water so we get all the seasons so we may need tarps to cover up in spring and fall to prevent oversoaking.


Any suggestions, recipes, heads up much apreciated . This is still concept stage but i am absolutly in the works of making this happen .

Try not to burn your shit down. Keep the piles low or ur gonna blaze the hood. Long and low, is the way to go.

It's a great idea, and i will be doing some too on my new land.

Recipes are held close by those who 'know', but i would say crab shell compost is the best that has ever been formulated. get that down, and peeps will be knocking down your door for the stuff.

Crab shells are also free and available.
Neighbors are probably almost far enough away lol

Fish and crab will smell and have furry visitors. Will be killer compost.
Lots of stuff to go in but for that size of an operation if its free use it, wether fishing waste or forest waste.
You do landscaping? Try ramial chipped wood

Alfalfa and seaweed are awsome if you can get it. Egg shells and/oyster shells buffer the soil and add calcium. Coffee grounds maybe had for free if you ask your local cafe. Dont limit yourself to only chicken poo either. Also plain and boring as it is leaves, grass clippings, and straw work well.

Note on alfalfa you can buy large bags sold as horse feed.

If you could get free feathers, that would be a good input also. It helps if they don't chemically strip the birds of their feathers because I think that it has arsenic in it. The fish, I would Bokashi them first to keep them from stinking. It would be very similar to fish hydrolysate. From what I understand, wood chips take about 2yrs to break down but adding the fish hydrolysate and/or garden giant mushrooms would speed it up. Fungi like fish, so they should work well together.
