Compost Sterilization?

I am growing a couple outdoors and am using Black Gold soil in combination with some great composted soil. I need to know if the compost material needs to be treated in any way to ensure I do end up with any mite or infestation problems (hopefully)? I have also heard that some people sterilize their composted soil?

yup, ad recommend it, i have to do it cuz the compost pile i use is very large and is like 10 years old so its got lots of life in it, i usually do it by steaming the compost , ( if i don't i get aphids on my other plants and spidy mites on my mj, this time i did it and i still got a few but i was able to neutralize em

if compost is made right it steralizes it self. but most of us are not perfect. so this is what i do. cause steam would kill all the bacteria that you want from the compost. if its old its not compost. its soil. compost is a a yr old. so if its old your going to want to reactive it. mix in some greens and browns again. i place all of mine in garbage cans. i mix in grass clipping and alfalfa pellets bone meal and blood not to much. not making super soil. mix it and water it. let it sit. in a few days dump it out. it will be smoking hot natural cooking and killing bugs. it has to be in a pile. or the heat will not kill the bugs on the outside near surface. the garbage can works well for keeping all the heat in. i wouldn't us 5 gallon bucket to small you cant get enough heat from that. placing in the hot sun helps to.

If you do sterilize it, use steam or your oven...NOT a microwave...a microwave will kill the helpfull bacteria and youll be left with basicaly dust.
