Concerned about smell... how effective are tents with carbon filters?

I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis a few months back (a chronic inflammatory bowel disease). After months of suffering and pain my doctor suggested alternative medicines (off the record) since it's easy to get where I live in Quebec, Canada. So I tried it, using a vaporizer (according to my doctor and the research, it was the most effective and simple. Edibles are superior my GI doctor said, at least for my condition, so I'll try to cannabutter using the slow cooker method and make myself some brownies in the near future) and I could not believe the difference it made. After a month I was in remission. Since then it's been relative smooth sailing. I even stopped taking all meds but one.

So I've decided to grow my own. I have easy access to m39 seeds so will probably choose that strain, as it is very popular. Apparently, with a simple 12/12 cycle, I should get a harvest in 42 days. I don't have much of a green thumb and never grown any cannabis before but I am very disciplined and determined to make this work.

My main concern is the smell. I'll be growing this in a tent placed in a very large closet. Most guides and "newbie/first time growers" posts mention the smell and need of a filter to reduce the smell, but is it possible to mitigate it completely with whatever gadgets may exist?

I'd be very thankful for some pointers on this. I really wanted to do as much research as I could before posting here and avoid sounding like a lazy noob who hasn't done his research, but couldn't find satisfactory answers on that front.

Thanks so much!

By gadgets I'm assuming you mean an ozone generator? But to answer your question, yes, you should have a carbon filter. It's not really necessary until close to the flowering period, but they are good to have and inexpensive to build. There are different methods of building one on the site and with a simple search you will find it.
Also, ozone generators only do so much for smell to a certain point. I believe it is only useful to cover a small area, but once the smell passes that area there is nothing you can really do. By filtering the smell before it even hits the outside of the tent is the best option. IMO.
Good luck on your grow and welcome to RIU.

Mine is 90% effective. I have the door closed to the room with the tent in it. When I come home from work and open it, I do smell the plants some.

It is no where near what it would be without a carbon filter. I have a small Holmes air purifier with added carbon in it for a back up, but have not used it as yet. Ona gel around the tent or exhaust of the tent, would be a good idea too.

So yes, you do want one, and in my experience they are not 100% but well worth it.

I'm not sure if people who are unfamiliar with the smell of live marijuana would actually recognize the smell of a growing plant. I certainly can recognize the smell of burning marijuana but it's nothing like the aroma of fresh green plants. I really enjoy the aroma so I have no intention of trying to hide it. I live in a home surrounded by acres of forest in the middle of the woods and 100% legal so it might be a different story.

Mine works really really well. They don't cost much .. i found mine on CL for 100 came with a 6' sun systems inline fan and the filter is HUGE.

Just look around im sure you can find a good deal.
