FRESNO, Calif. -- A jury has convicted a Gustine man for growing marijuana in California's Sierra Nevada, where he worked as a cook for illegal pot-growing crews last summer, according to federal prosecutors.
The federal jury in Fresno also found 54-year-old Heriberto Sicairos-Quintero guilty of aiding and abetting the growing of marijuana and carrying a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime.
Agents destroyed more than 400,000 marijuana plants in the weekslong sweep called Operation Save our Sierras.
Sicairos-Quintero was arrested on July 13, carrying a loaded handgun as he tried to flee a grow site in the Sierra National Forest outfitted with irrigation lines and fertilizer.
He is scheduled to be sentenced on February 22. He faces a minimum term of 15 years and a $4.25 million fine.
