Cool with JUST ice.. or will that mess up the smoke?

So I got a semi nice home made piece with a big ash catcher but the piece is kinda cracked to a leak.. I can use it but not with water.
I was wondering if I can fill the big ash catcher and the bong with ice and have it cool?
WIll the smoke get stuck to the ice or anything crazy??
I don't want to lose potency

Would it help or just rape the smoke of its cannaboids?

i dont think so.... just put a peice of tape over the crack to keep it from leaking. and smoke would go out of the crack keeping the bong from filling up with smoke completely
