hi been i have been buying seeds for cover crop . clover and buckwheat and was wanting to know can i use something like parsley or is it too nitrogen hungry . i have a backyard basically full of parsley and can get a never ending supply of seeds from them
oh im growing no till organic soil

I’ve never heard of parsley having any specific benefit. On the right track with buckwheat and clover.
i dont really understand the benefit of a cover crop vs just mulch but it does look better with stuff growing but on saying that i dont really want to spend money on seeds just because it looks better haha . i think i will just try it

mulch relies on capillary action of the soil to keep the top layer moist mostly while with living mulch the roots of the cover crop also pulls water up and transpire, releasing it around the top layer.

also when you mow down the clover and let it decompose on the soil it serves as a breeding ground for the soil fauna in general while also returning all the minerals and elements pulled up by the plant plus the energy trapped by the plant as carbohydrates/carbon.

basil is used as a flavor enhancer near tomatoes afaik for example so you can use other companion plants to serve your plants overall quality too.

mulching is a must in organic soil and any organic material will do in the end but if your setup allows it why not go living?
